Hunting in the rain?

Hunting in the rain? - 10/10/14 06:00 PM

Will be hitting some public land this weekend and just curious what everyone's thoughts are on hunting when a front is coming through like this? I'll be out there either way just looking for opinions lol

Fronts are good; from my experience deer don't move too good in the rain, that's why I hit the ranch early this week and got back this morning. Hard to track a blood trail in the rain and mud.

^^ x2. They will move after the rain a neusance mist drizzle will get them moving really well add some colder temps and the woods come alive. Il be out with my lil ones in the morning for there first crossbow hunt. Fingers are crossed. The next front that hits down here on Tuesday is looking even better to drop temps I hunt the hill country and will be low to mid 40s and il be in the blind hoping this moon and temp drop gets a prerut going. Last year they were pushing does hard this time of season.

I'm sure hoping that front gets them moving; all I've had in range this week were small two year old bucks. I'm thinking of hitting the ranch this coming week depending on the front; I'll sure be watching the weather. laugh

These North Texas storms we're having right now is the reason I left the ranch this morning. I try to hunt three or four days a week... I'll be head out Tue. or Wed. again. Hopefully it's not a mud hole.

How'd everybody do? I'm still out here for a couple more minutes, seems like it [censored] them down this morning. I put corn out last night and it was still there in the morning which is unusual. They are active this evening, just can't get them to come in. Doesn't help I'm at public land and I've had two people walk out in the last thirty minutes making a bunch of noise and such frown

They moved in the 15 min window we had when it drizzled instead of rain this morning. My daughter for a 6 pnt. Back in the blind in the morning with the youngest. Looking for her first deer. Good luck everyone

Actually it can make tracking a lot easier as long as it's not running water. When you shoot a deer, they run. when they run their hooves leave big deep tracks in wet ground.

Re: Hunting in the rain? - 11/05/14 06:27 PM

I will say this on hunting in the rain, and I have a lot of experience in it!! I will start with saying I am a 100% bow hunter, if I can't hunt it with a bow I don't hunt it with the exception of Dove and Quail, and I put a lot of time in the stand or spot and stalk. Since this season started on Sept 27th I have missed 4 days of hunting and have been the last 13 days. My experience and knowledge on it defies what everything you hear, read about, and think. You will hear deer don't move in the rain or high winds etc etc etc.........WRONG!!!! My 2 biggest harvests with a bow were in heavy rain out in the open not in cover!! The biggest buck I have seen in person while hunting was in a very heavy rain out in the open. Yesterday was raining cats and dogs so you can bet I was out in it getting soaked sitting behind a ghostblind in an open coastal field saw 8 deer 3 bucks one mature passed on two young bucks with great potential and the mature one I just wasn't set up in the path he traveled he was 91 yrds away. What I have noticed is that the deer are more calm on these days, (this is my guess) think about when you are in the woods with that weather how loud it is, so I think that it is so much quieter out in the open in comparison on those days. What I do know is if you want a good chance at a great buck GET OUT IN IT AND GET ONE!!! There is no such thing as bad weather just a poorly dressed hunter!! I see more mature deer on very windy days than young!!! I prefer hunting in "bad weather" which from my experience means great weather for hunting. Plus you will not find a better day for spot and stalk than on a windy wet day!!!!

The best time to be in the woods is to get in the tree as the rain is falling (but you can see the end in sight on the radar) and then be in place as it tapers off and then stops. The deer will start moving as the rain tapers off.

With a rifle I am there. With a bow, if the rain is at all significant, I'm in camp. Blood trails wash away quickly in the rain. And the vast majority of my hunting is with a bow so . . .
