Increasing penetration

What do you consider the top factors that enhance arrow penetration?

Does anybody else take these factors into consideration when choosing a arrow and broad head system?

Weight (550gn), FOC and small 3 blade broad head are what work for me on hogs. A pass thru on every one i have hit so far. If you can get good arrow penetration on hogs most everything else seems like hot butter. I believe that shot placement is far more important. Heck, you can kill a hog with a hammer if you hit him in the right spot.

Sure glad you posted that; I've been preaching that for years and a few smart ones have taken my advice however; others follow the advice of those don't have a clue resulting in many lost animals every year.

I certainly have to apply those methods now that I shoot strictly trad. With my compound I was shooting almost 600 total grains with 17% FOC. I don't remember the exact K.E. but it was over 80lbs.

Think of it as getting T boned in your car. A bus going 25 mph isn't going to hit at the same speed as a smart car going 30 mph but it's not going to stop when it makes impact. It's going to push on through the intersection.

Well tuned bow with correctly spined "heavy" arrows tipped with non expanding razor sharp heads...most folks these days only care about speed and not so much on cast. There's a fine balance of speed and weight you must find. Back in the day I hunted with a Proline Point Blank 75# draw and shot a 2317 XX75 Easton with a 125 Thunderhead. Bow chronographed at 225 FPS, a slug of a bow these days. With that bow I would intentionally shoot deer in the shoulders and bowl them over. Most were DRT some would make a bit further. Bow was dead quiet on the shot, never had a string jump. Wishing I still had that setup. Got caught up in the speed craze of the overdraw days. Ha, remember when 300FPS was the benchmark? Lots has changed over the years.

Dr. Ashby does some great research for the sport of archery. I have read all his work and use most of his techniques. I could never get my broadheads to fly straight (would shoot 4 bulls eyes and one random three inches away all the time) until I read his article on single beveled heads and how to coordinate them with your fletchings, been shooting my broadheads like field points ever since. Ashby's the real deal, I wish more people would read his work, it seems like if he had a tv show everybody would listen. Kind of seems like people are too lazy to read these days, but maybe it's just me...

I'll keep shooting my sub 500gr arrows with 11% FOC and grim reapers and pass through my animals

Now if I was shooting Cape buffalo or elephant I go big but not for N American game

I was never caught up on speed, so I have always shot heavy set ups with low percentage FOC...

Great post that most do not even think about, all they worry about is shooting light and more speed...

It's all in the hips. That's what I heard anyway.
