Oklahoma Deer Tags? - 10/04/12 11:50 AM

Going to start my hunting in Oklahoma this weekend and was just curious if there were any hunters from Oklahoma on this forum and what you use for deer tags? I have some ideas but not sure what would work the best or be durable enough. Thanks for any advise you could give.

Not sure what you are asking. You mean to keep them dry since they are paper? Or what?

Re: Oklahoma Deer Tags? - 10/04/12 01:03 PM

My Oklahoma N/R Archery license doesn't have tags on it to put on the animals. What do you do about tagging one?

Re: Oklahoma Deer Tags? - 10/04/12 01:21 PM

Unless it's changed, you have to purchase your tags separately.

Re: Oklahoma Deer Tags? - 10/04/12 01:54 PM

Just spoke with the lady at ODWC and she told me that I needed to make my own tags with proper info and put it on the deer. How odd is that? She did say that I could use anything.

You got it answered before I could respond. Yeah on a piece of paper you just write your tag number and deer info. Also when you check it either online or at a check station they will give you a carcuse tag. That us actually what will go with the deer.

It has changed. With your NR license you get 4 deer. Two bucks and two does. Extra doe tags can be bought for $50.

Re: Oklahoma Deer Tags? - 10/04/12 04:38 PM

Sweet lady at ODWC said 6 deer, no more tan 2 bucks. I also have turkey but don't want to spend another $152.00 to shoot 1.

Wow they must of changed it for this year again. You do know that each weapon has to have a different license. So if you gun hunt, muzzle loader, and archery. You have to have 3 license. $285 each.

Re: Oklahoma Deer Tags? - 10/04/12 05:38 PM

I'm only bow hunting for the entire season or until the end of December so that I don't have to buy the annual license, physcal year to hunt from Jan.1 to Jan. 15. and I would have to buy my 2013 archery license. So I would be spending a crap load for licenses. I do know that I will have to wear orange while bow hunting during a open firearms season. Bites but those are the rules.

Re: Oklahoma Deer Tags? - 10/04/12 05:47 PM

I only have to wear a hat or vest but I have to have it on while hunting. I am researching this thing pretty well so that the ODWC officer doesn't wear my butt out and it ends up costing me a crap load of cash after finding a free hunting place.

Re: Oklahoma Deer Tags? - 10/04/12 06:36 PM

On the hunter orange in OK, the first time I hunted on some private land a few years ago I showed up not wearing it and all the other guys that had invited me looked like traffic cones. I had some with me because I hunt Texas public land but I was the one that looked like a doofus. That's how them Okies roll

God, today has been so slow!!!!!! I can only imagine what tomorrow will be like before I get to leave. Me not hunting is like a junky without a fix. It has been to long! My children are all grown and gone and I thought I would have more time to do the things that I wanted to do. Man, was I wrong.

I'm hunting Push county this year. Heading out this weekend for first time. Hope the cooler weather turns them on a bit. My buddy has been hunting there this week and it's been slow. He did shoot 2 hogs though!

Re: Oklahoma Deer Tags? - 10/04/12 06:51 PM

I lived in Okla. for a while, is that Pushmataha county? The only reason that I remember that is because my hist. teacher did this thing with counties. That one was what I would do if my mataha ran out of gas. PUSHMATAHA. Corny as crap I know but I still remember it from 35 years ago. Must have made a impression.

But, once they figure out that I am there that will probably change. I'm sure they already know things are different.

Re: Oklahoma Deer Tags? - 10/04/12 07:40 PM

When Oklahoma went to the new licensing, it was truly a great deal for the bow and crossbow hunters. For one $280 bow deer license they now allow the full state 6 deer limit to be taken under that one license both public and private land. Add $26 for conservation passport only for certain public lands. And as one already noted you can bowhunt all deer seasons from Oct 1 to Jan 15. Much better and cheeper for us than the old system of needing to buy a separate tag for every deer. They did make part of it confusing though by making the 2012 archery license good only till Jan 1, 2012 despite the fact the season is open till the 15th. So one has to have a 2013 archery license to hunt deer Jan 1 to Jan 15 2013, yet any deer taken during that time still apply to the 2012 limit. crazy

Re: Oklahoma Deer Tags? - 10/04/12 08:10 PM

You may have to buy the license again for 15 days of hunting but come October 1st of 2013 you don't have to buy another one. You would be a head of the game.

Re: Oklahoma Deer Tags? - 10/04/12 08:52 PM

This gentleman has 3 different properties, one is a drainage area full of deer, one is a wheat field(also saw deer in it) and the other is right on the Red River but he hasn't taken me to that one yet. I feel that he is checking out how I operate and is saving the best for last. If it is any better than the area that I set up in, heaven help me or the deer I should say.

Re: Oklahoma Deer Tags? - 10/05/12 12:44 AM

Its confusing but here we go...

Non resident deer hunters do not have to have the General Hunting License to hunt deer you only need the DEER TAG/ Permit.

Oklahoma has game check stations that you have to take the deer to and they issue the transport tag/or you can check them in online now.

When you kill the deer you attach a "transport tag" this is any piece of paper with your

Name
License number
Method of kill
Time & date of kill

The easiest thing to do is take a business card if you have them and write your License # on a few of them and put them, zip ties and a pen in a ziplock bag in your pack.

When bow hunting you simply have to weat the orange to and from the stand.

I pay 280 every year for a buck and a doe (archery); unless something changed this year. I haven't made it there is year. I may go in Nov. or Dec. depending on how things go in Texas.

You don't get a tag you get a piece of paper saying you paid; when you shoot a deer you take it to a station where they mark down what you shot and make a record of it, and give you a transport document.
