Eye Dominance??? - 10/21/11 09:13 PM

Does it matter on bow hunting? I would think so, but thought I would ask.

It matters alot. That is determines on which bow you shoot. I am right handed but left I dominant so I shot a left handed bow.

I am in the same boat but having a real hard time finding a used lefty. That is why I asked. I started shooting lefty on firearms a few years back and assumed I would need to do the same with a bow.

jason,
Be patient and you will find a lefty bow. You will be much happier shooting a left handed bow. The good part is that alot of times you may be able to get a good deal on one because they are not in huge demand.

My father was right handed Left eye dominant, and so am I. The second he figured it out he forbid me to shoot right handed. I am glad he did, I do everything in the worls with my right hand except shoot. Why fight nature, if you let yur natural tendancies rule you will be a much better shot for it.

I bought a left handed bow on Ebay spring of 2010 and have shot 2 doe and a squirell with it. My deal was with a local bowshop, they help me find a bow and I would let them rig it up. A win win for both of us.

I grew up shooting right handed guns and bows. That's just what my dad got me. Didn't know anything about Right or left Eye dominance.

Come to find out I'm left eye dominant. Already got all my gear in right handed and shoot pretty darn good that way so I'm gonna keep at it.

I may try shooting left handed with a rifle though. I wonder if it'll make a difference on the free handed shots? My right hand is more coordinated anyway so I figure it's worth a try. Who knows I may go to shooting lefty. Shot my first buck lefty cause I had no other option.

If you are left eye dominant and shoot right hand with both eyes open i wonder were that arow would go? not on target i do not think.

If you're closing the dominant eye then it doesn't matter. You are only going to see out of the eye that's open. So if you're using a peep and pins it's a moot point. If you are shooting traditional with both eyes open or a shotgun for example then you should shoot with your dominant eye on the barrel/ arrow etc.
I trained alot of young marksmen back in the day and we used to put eye patches on them. They shot just fine and learned to shoot with the off eye closed. No dominance issues.

I am right handed and left eye dominate. I just close my left eye when i shoot. Now my shotgun hunting is a different story. I have been working on shooting left handed while shooting with open sights, but i dont feel like it hurts me with a bow or scoped gun.

Thank you sir, im left eye dominant but shoot right handed, when i first started shooting a bow i would wear an eye patch, now i shoot just fine right handed without the patch. close the left eye and line up the pin through the peep and it doesn't matter.
good thread op

I am guessing you shoot a compound with sights. If so, closing he dominant eye and shooting with the off eye does not make a huge difference. If however, you shoot traditional bows without sights, closing the dominant eye will put your shot on target but seriously mess with your depth perception. I am right handed but left eye dominant also.

Shot right handed for years closing the dominant eye and did OK. About 25 years ago I had a custom bow made. When I went to the shop to pick it up, the bowyer asked me why I was closing my eye so I told him. He went back into his shop brought and a left handed bow and made me learn to shoot left handed. I was surprised how easy the transition was. He then said come back in 10 weeks, he would sell the bow he made for me and remake it left handed. I am still shooting that bow.

Have you ever tried it??? I have and hit my target everytime. You see, when you shoot with both eyes open, your dominant eye takes over.
