Minimum draw weight for hogs/deer

Well my bow is set 65# that good enough? Also is a 20# draw for hogs good or will they suffer any insight will help dont want to do any harm to animals and make them suffer thanks

Anyone?

65# is more than enough. 20# on the other hand is not very much. Personally I would not shoot any animal with less than 35-40 pounds draw weight.

I do shoot a recurve sometimes and it's only about 52# and that to me is the least I will shoot. I don't want an animal to suffer too much, even if it's a hog. The law used to be 35# minimum.

Do not rememnber and the book is in the truck. Most states that do have a Min poundage for deer it is 40lbs or the ones I have hunted that is the Min for Deer

I am confident at 65#s just wanted to make sure before doing the wrong doing and making an animal suffer using my other bow I do appreciate the info guys

I think this year they changed it to no min. I was kind of shocked, I'll have to check in the book, right now I'm just too lazy to look.

You are 100% correct. There is no longer a min poundage for draw weight in Texas.

I don't know what they are thinking. It should be at least 35#. Hopefully serious archers will not let anyone hunt with anything less. No good! It's like saying you can hunt deer with a 22!

Minimum poundage changed a couple of years ago. Some bows at 30 pounds will sling an arrow faster that older, higher poundage bows. My Recurve, on an average, shoots at 149 fps.

A well placed .22LR will put down a good sized pig with a well placed shot.

We had this discussion this past week. It isn't the poundage it is the kenetic energy of the arrow. The question should be what is the kenetic energy required to make an ethical kill. I don't know the answer. I do know that my first compound bow was maxed out at 70 pounds and I was only shooting 180fps. My current bow is shooting 310 fps. I know of a 4th grader that shoot a couple of deer this past weekend and a ram this past season with about a 30-35 pound bow with a 85gr broadhead. Look at the trad guys. They are shooting bows as low as 45 pounds and I know they don't have near the speed of a compound bow.

It comes down to kenetic energy and shot placement.

20# is too light IMO. I agree with the 40# rule and not sure why they changed it. I know that technology has come a long way, so maybe 35#. Problem is that most the people I know shooting that weight are small people and have small arrows, so the KE is going to be low too. Kid at our lease was shooting 40# and two of the deer he shot only had about 4" of penetration. Killed them, but we tracked em a long way.

I'm pulling 70 on my bow I just got this week, it is pretty dang fast. I'm shooting some carbon express arrows and at 20-30 yards it buries them in my target. I imagine it is gunna be an easy passthrough on a deer.
