How many shots?

How many shots? - 11/15/10 07:43 PM

How many if any practice shots will you make at foam target using a broadhead before you won't hunt with it anymore?
How many arrows do you carry when you hunt?

Depends on how many times you sharpen it.
I carry 4 to hunt.

For me it's none...only use new blades. Buddies shoot theirs once or twice and they are fine.

I carry 6 in the quiver.

I never use one I have shot into a target. Not sure that is good or bad but how I do it. The ones that are shot into targets become pig killers. 6 arrows in the quiver. 4 for deer and 2 for hogs. About twenty years ago I shot at a buck 3 times and ran out of arrows. He kept ducking my shot. That's why it has always been 4 in the quiver for me from then on.

Let me backtrack a little to say that this will be my first season with a bow. I feel pretty confident shooting field points in the comfort of my own backyard at a stationary target within 25yrds. I realize it's a whole new ball game when you're in the blind, but I don't know how else to prepare for that part.
I'm going to use 100g Slick Tricks. So my concerns are about how much the flight will change with the broadheads. I'm under the impression that you practice And make changes with the broadheads, but if shooting a target more than a couple of times makes them too dull to hunt with I'll need to get more at $30 a package. Currently I have one package of three and from the responses so far, that may not be enough. Maybe I need two packages to hunt with and use what I have to practice with?
So do you get your setup dialed in with a certain arrow/BH combo and assume that if nothing else changes it will shoot the same (human factor aside)?
Do you shoot each arrow once the BH is on to make sure it's not way off?

I shoot montec and always shoot them at a target before hunting with them. Then I just sharpen them. You can take 3 of the same arrows and 3 of the same broadheads and they will all shoot differently. I always find the arrow/broadhead combo that shoots the best, mark the fletching, and sharpen it for hunting.

I will shoot them all I want, and sharpen my razor sharp before I hunt. I carry 8 arrows in my quiver on one bow, and five on by back up bow.

It may not be the greatist way but only shoot a broadhead when I change arrows (get a new box of them). Ive also killed up to 4 deer with the same broad head and arrow.
When ever my blades get a nick I change them out, I use thunderheads.
to me if Injuns killed them with sharp rocks and sticks, then my set up will do the job.

I only use one arrow for practice and just pull it for the next shot. To practice with a broadhead, I just change the practice arrow from a field point to a broadhead. I'll use the same broadhead for practice only and won't hunt with it.

What BowSlayer said.
With that said I switched to rage BH this year and only shot the practice tip before hunting. I'm not going to chunk a $15.00 BH in a target that I can't sharpen. Shot a doe with a rage and it flew just like field point. My bow is set up pretty good and fixed blade BH fly real close to field points. I carry 7 arrows 2 for deer and 4 for pigs and sometimes I have to get down and pick my pig arrows back up. Have been known to kill 2 pigs with same arrow.( Is that wrong shooting a bloody arrow at another pig?) You will shoot 1 and they will run off then some will come back then you shoot again. Last arrow is a blunt in case I have a cow that won't leave.

I resharpen or replace blades on any head I use to practice.

I always resight my bow when switching from field points.

I shoot each broadhead once into foam. Something only about 5" thick so that the BH will go through. That way I can unscrew the BH and pull the arrow out without friction on the blades twice. If they fly right I shoot em, if not I try em on a different arrow. If they still don't fly right, I trash em. I carry 4 arrows. I've never needed more than one. I carry 2 muzzy or crimson talon for deer(any broadhead I trust with a chisel point for breaking bones), 1 judo for fun(twigs, cow patties, rabbits, squirrels, birds, etc....) and one spitfire BH for turkeys and hogs (I won't shoot mechanicals at deer)
Happy hunting!

Re: How many shots? - 11/17/10 02:46 PM

I shoot my broadheads at least a few times before I hunt. I at least want to make sure there aren't any surprises with the way they fly.

After that. I'll sharpen them and practice with field points. I carry 3 arrows. That's all my quiver holds. Besides, If I can't hit it with 3 arrows, I probably need to quit trying.

And now that It's gun season, I keep the rifle hanging nearby just in case that buck of a lifetime comes out at 100 yds. If 3 arrows won't get it then the Rifle will.

i carry six arrows for a good reason. not because im a bad shot but because ive been known to shoot a deer and multiple hogs out of a group in one sitting lol.

take one of the broadhead out and dedicate it just to practice. Shoot only one arrow at a time while practicing. That will save you some torn fletchings. Then all you gotta do is buy one more pack and that'll giv you five new sharp heads to hunt with. Just put that one same broadhead back on whenever you practice then switch it out when you hunt

Weird I had a cull do that to me Friday night before gun season opened. A weird tall spike one one side and 3 on the other. I called him "Ninja" that night. The next day he went down with a black powder hit. No more Ninja.
