I would like to dab my feet in competition. Traditional pRS and their 13# guns I am somewhat familiar with. However, what other classes are available? What are requirements of the firearm and equipment allowed?

For starter based on where you are located have you considered the PRS/NRL 22 style comps. Senior (here on THF) puts on multiple matches and there are others within a couple hours drive to you.
Just like all the shooting sports you can go basic or get as extravagant as you feel inclined and ammo is not as hard to find nor as pricey as the Centerfire stuff.
I shoot a few local club matches and when my schedule allows make a bigger match here and there. Wanted to make the Punisher Match that Senior is having next weekend but have to play golf in the Nimitz Golf Classic.
Are you saying they have 13 guns or they weigh 13lbs in PRS? I would say both of those would be incorrect. The guns now weigh 23lbs and instead of 13 guns it’s that many shooting bags wink

Like DStroud said we do multiple different types of matches through out the year at NTxR in Valley View. The Rimfire Punisher is a pretty salty match but we’d love to have you out. You can click on the NTxR League logo in my signature for more info on our club. Then click on any of the match dates to register. There is no club fee or dues.

Also, though not as often, the same range in Valley View hosts a 500 yard, centerfire match. You can read about it in a thread somewhere below …..”500 yard match”.

There are various club level or more laid back prs style matches throughout the state depending on your location. Most are pretty laid back and welcoming to newcomers.

And the community is very helpful to new shooters. Tell them right up front you are new to this, and you will get all the help you need.

I am looking for competition with “dual purpose” rifle. Something like waypoint 2020 in 7PRC if they ever make one. Or a semi custom tikka 6CM. Both would be used as elk/nilgai - or deer/coyote/critter. Neither will sport 26” barrels and weigh as much as my truck. I can’t justify the money or time.

I don’t think I would have a dedicated target rifle that I wouldn’t drag out to hunt with also. Very accurate rifles can be built in the #12 range. Factory CTR with a heavy scope is under that. The CTR is nothing to frown upon despite people with $10,000 rigs attempting to do so. They still get beat by them. Most matches you can win with a $2000 investment and lose with a $10,000 investments.

Tikka CTR, XTR II, muzzle brake of choice, and a Harris bipod.

I have shot matches with a variety of setups ranging from my hunting rifle (similar to a waypoint) up to a 30lb purpose built gun. At a club match level it doesn’t really matter and will only make you more proficient. I will say that most of these matches are 75-100rds and that many rounds of prc sounds miserable personally.

Fossil point near Decatur has a PRS league and shoots.

In true PRS there is now a "stock rifle" class meaning rifles costing under $3,000. So those of us who can't afford a $6,000 custom PRS gun with extra barrel can compete.

Seniors 500 tard steel match is a great shoot. Easy to get into friendly, laid back, FUN, competition.

Budget? Dont forget the VERY important optic.

Do you reload? that will affect choices.
