I’ve said this the last couple of years about academy. You have to shop them now. Always had the lowest prices for years but that’s no longer the case.

You're talking a $30 difference. Not really a significant difference on a $1600 rifle.

It was inevitable once ownership changed from private to corporate hands.

I think Cabelas has had some incorrect prices lately. I got a pistol recently for a really good price, like the best price on the internet. Next day the price jumped by $200 to what most are selling it for. I think it was an incorrect price that they ended up honoring.

Im pretty sure Academy will price match if you talk to a manager.

Supply chain issues are forcing more people to abide by map pricing.

Technically the mfg sets the price, the retailers normally follows and then ask for margin support or “ on sale” ability on slow moving items. Academy’s also doesnt traditionally carry the higher tier lines or colors of certain Mfg’ers like Nike, Columbia, UA, etc

When you see an add “pricing” Memorial Day special, or Blk Friday, The retailer normally didn’t set that pricing, mfg did.

KKR is actually done a good job raising the brand tier levels while increase the brand strength. They have doubled their IPO price in two years, even at that I think they are under valued

Hat tip to KKR.

The only good thing about the Morris brand vs KKR is Morris does give Veteran discounts where I don’t think KKR does

It's an in stock item vs an out of stock item as well. Cabelas can leave the old price online forever, and only change it when they get the item back in stock. Not uncommon.

I believe both items are "ship to store" only, which I assume means they exist in each company's warehouse. Both websites often show firearms that are not available at that time. You just have to keep checking back to see when the order links have become active. I take this to mean they now have it in the warehouse and will ship to the store of your choice once you order and pay for it.

It's worth searching both Academy and Cabela's websites from time to time to see what they have available for online order with ship to store. They're often models you'll never see on store shelves. It was some time ago that I purchased a NIB, old stock Winchester Model 94 from Academy. No one would have ever known it was even available without doing a search for a Winchester Model 94. It must have been a rare case where the company got access to some new, old stock rifles and offered them for online order only. I honestly didn't believe it would show up at the store until they called me a few days later to tell me it was ready for pickup.

The academy rifle is 6.5 gaymoor and the cabelas rifle is 30-06. Maybe it’s worth $30 to some folks to shoot the hip new round.

Exactly, if those prices make your decision, you're looking at the wrong rifle anyway.

Bought a box of ammo for 52.99 at scheels and saw it two days later at academy for 61.99. It’s not what it used to be. They have great clearances still luckily once or twice a year

Bingo. When I worked at corporate, I heard a story once that Gochman chewed out a buying office for "screwing the customer" for getting too much margin on a product and demanded the price be lowered.

Their highest margins are the Magellan line, created well before KKR. So I doubt that he actually chewed on someone unless they got margin support from the MFG on slow moving, late shipment etc and didn’t discount it to push turn over, which would make business sense.

I don’t think people realize how involved the mfg is in retail pricing, and how it’s policed

Biggest change is normally product lines with a company gets boughtout. Tier levels normally go up or down depending on price point they are chasing

Academy may very well be higher than Cabelas for ammo. However I don't have a Cabelas within 300 miles of me and Academy is 10 miles away. I doubt the price difference would equal shipping costs.

I feel like the Cabelas Ft Worth store is on the verge of petering out

About once a month I stop in

And the last 3-4 times I stopped in, there’s hardly anybody there.

As in less than 10 cars in the customer parking area

Idk what the deal is. Place used to be packed

They basically fired the cabelas buyers and just used BP’’s . BP’s has more of a sporting out wear mentality like Dicks and Academy. I think that’s a huge mistake

Good article on it. Hedge fund basically forced Cabela’s to sell once they acquired 11% of the stock.

I have pretty much quit Cabelas. I couldn’t quit BP because I never bought from them anyway.
Now I am a Scheels supporter. Hope a Hedge Fund gets Bass Pro so they can take them down that successful road that Remington went.

Hate to see Cabella's go under. I remember ordering their catalog from the back of Field & Stream as a teen in the early 70's.

Re: Academy more expensive than Cabela's? - 05/09/22 12:29 AM

Was at Academy in Odessa and they had a nice Horizen or other semi high end bolt gun under glass. Thought that was kinda like air freshener in a out house scenario for this area. If I was going to buy that type rifle thats not where I would shop for it. They have decent over the counter firearms but that just didn't fit these demographics. Bought some $7 t-shirts for work instead.

I buy from a private guy, he charges 10% over but handles any concerns after the sale

People that know, guys that know

I aint claiming to coupon shopper guy here

But as infrequent as I stop in, I see the same guns for sale

They ain’t moving and ain’t nobody there

Well, that ain’t good is all I know

Re: Academy more expensive than Cabela's? - 05/09/22 03:10 AM

I saw some of the keystone crickett rifles at Academy for $169 the other day. It’s still a $125 gun at most Wal-Marts. I don’t know.

I over paid for the girls cricket rifles from a pawn shop but at least I was able to pick out a stock besides pink or tan plastic. We have three of the little crickett .22’s, two of the pink laminates and one of the black “glass-filled nylon” (plastic? Lol) with a higher comb on it. My daughters really enjoy them.

My budget is kind of tight but I quit hunting for the very best deal, instead I look for exactly what I want. If I can’t afford it I will wait until I can.

You actually save a lot of money waiting for exactly what you want because you don’t waste it on crap that falls short, and then lose money in the sale, lol.

Agree. I quit buying cheap crap some years back because disappointment sucks. I buy the good stuff or do without. I work too hard for my money to give myself headaches.

Re: Academy more expensive than Cabela's? - 05/09/22 02:27 PM

Up until 2018, Cabela's used to regularly sell $100 gift cards for $80. I bought more than $3000 worth of those discounted gift cards. Those made for incredible deals at Cabela's. Once the merger was complete, those deals ended. But I got some incredible deals at Cabela's using those GCs. Bought my son a CZ Teal O/U 20 gauge that was on sale for $500, less the 20% made it $400. When the Sako Finnlight II came out, Cabela's was closing out the original Finnlight for $1500; less the 20% made my .270 Win only $1200.

Yeah
It's gradually getting worse. Less and less hunting, fishing, and camping in all the chain stores.
I used to try to patronize the mom and pop stores for that very reason, but the mom and pops
all went away years back.
The mesquite Dicks dropped all their pretense and completely did away with all their hunting
and fishing gear. But. . . . . If you want a designer water bottle or some chartreuse spandex
shorts, they've got you covered.

So . . . What's everybody gonna do when buying outdoor sports gear on the internet is
no more, and the socialists do away with gun shows?

I’ve actually switched to a Scheels credit card. The statues outside of Scheels, make me feel good about spending my money there. Not to mention the Easter Email I got saying “He has risen”

Kind of hard not to get behind Scheels

Sounds like we need a Gasbuddy app for firearms.
