I NEVER do this and if its against the rules please delete it. Check out Gun Broker auction 925161550. I have no ties to this auction. Heck couldn't afford it anyway. I just don't understand.

Re: This is insane - 03/04/22 03:53 PM

That is crazy! Crazy times we live in though. I have a 1970 336 that was my fathers. It won’t ever leave the family.
They don’t make them like they used to.

I remember drooling over one of these at Gibsons in Kingsville Tx when I was a child. It had a price tag of $54.00. We farmed and just couldn't afford it. My how times change.

One born every day that might take the bait.
Mine is the centennial model with the medallion counter sunk in the stock, keeping mine.

There are 102 bids. There is NO asking price listed, NO Buy it Now button either. Its crazy because people have bid that.

Re: This is insane - 03/04/22 08:59 PM

The price you see is what it has been bid up to.
It was a $0.01 starting bid.

It’s simple. More money than sense. They’re out there. Just don’t let them in here. Hah!

Re: This is insane - 03/04/22 09:13 PM

Very nice example. All it takes is two avid collectors to make a bidding war that doesn't make sense to the rest of the world.

My point being Marlin will live on and they will have the model 336. Not trying to compare the two rifles.....

You can't make this up. Buying to say he owns it I guess. No way it's going hunting. Guess I'm not now or ever will be a collector or have that mindset.

Re: This is insane - 03/05/22 01:50 PM

A Ruger made Marlin is not a Marlin and a 336 from 1975 has no safety ... so the seller is correct. That gun will never be made again. The Rugers are very UN-lever like for my taste with laminate stock, big loop, rail, fiber sights, butt pad, stainless steel ... all opposite of what a lever should have. If it were a Centennial it would like be worth 1/4 because most people don't want the medallion. Wonder what my 1951 Waffle Top is worth? A Marlin 783 sold for over $700 a couple weeks ago and model 60's, the cheap crappy ones from the last decade that were $100 used, are now selling for nearly $300. Marlins seem to have risen the most of any brand.

Well I sure wish I still had my Marlin levers because I wouldn't have them much longer if I did...wow...they are great guns but not worth that...and I have probably owned 30 or more pre safety Marlins over the years never sold one for more than $500 or so...wow.

Yes it was a 336 in 44 magnum. The buyer in that auction has a good reputation if you look at his previous purchases. Must be a high roller.

10k is stupid for a levergun. I didn't realize they were so desirable right now. I think I paid $7-800 for my 308 ME XLR back in 2007. They're going for upwards of 2k on Gun Broker now. It's tempting to sell only because I can't find the 308 ME specific projectiles to load for it.

I missed it and can’t see pictures. Was this just your standard Marlin 336 from 1975? It’s got to be a scam to attempt to inflate prices.

Yep, just a standard 336, gold trigger, 30-30. It looked to be in excellent condition, but wasn't mint by any stretch.

Just because the sale is final and feedback was left in no way means the buyer paid five digits (or even paid at all) for the rifle. The seller and buyer (plus others that bid) are likley working together.

That would be tough to pull off because one way GunBroker calculates their fee is by final sale price. This hits the sellers credit card on file.

Buyer and seller can submit claim to GB after the fact that they canceled the transaction and get reimbursed I believe. I've heard this is how they do it.

What would be the point of doing this? If that majority are sitting on the sidelines watching two people have a bidding war that goes insane, I doubt that would have an impact on the overall market. It would seem like a lot of work for little to no reward.

If you had 2565 guns to sell it would help a lot if some of them shot through the roof in value. There are a number of reasons people make up scams. It's a lot easier to believe than someone paying five digits for a $600 rifle.

If you owned 50 of those rifles, and you and another guy did this on a bunch of listings and drove up the perceived value of the gun by $200 per rifle, that's $10k extra profit. Not sure what your time is worth, but folks will do a lot of stuff for $10k

Or is it more reasonable to believe that some chump paid $10k for a $700 gun?
Posted By: Choctaw

Opdate: Re: This is insane - 03/25/22 01:39 PM

I wouldn't pay $700 for even a vaunted JM marked Marlin. It's still just a Marlin and there are hundreds of thousands of them out there.

I'm not saying my scenario is super likely. We're arguing about a bunch of unlikely scenarios. The buyer has his choice of any other Marlin 336 he could have bid at for $1000. Why would he bid this one up to $10k unless he had some other motivation? Just doesn't make sense either way, but I have 100% seen and know of folks bidding up auctions that they had no intention of completing a transaction on. I have never seen someone pay 10x the price on something when there are dozens of others he could have bid on.
