Sounds like the CEO is doing the right thing. Remington turned into a P.O.S. so now he's saying let's the get the quality back up.

Wood stocks with open pores and a matte finish are becoming far more common. They do seem to hide war licks much better than a high gloss finish.

I like Remington. Grew up shooting an 870 and still think they are the best pump action made. (The wingmaster not the express) Couple years back I bought a 5r Gen 2 and that thing shoots lights out! Came with HS precision stock and threaded fluted barrel. I’m over the moon with it.

I have a Wingmaster from the early 1970's that looks new still so a sandblasted receiver with matte finished piece of plywood for a stock interests me zero.

That model replaced the express. It’s definitely an upgrade in my opinion. Let’s see what they do with then Wingmaster.

I'm ready to see the 17 Fireball back in production.

I’ve had good luck with the 700 series

The Remington 870 was my favorite shotgun...until I shot a Benelli Supernova. Stronger design, handles pressure better, chrome lined barrels, better ejector, rotating bolt, smoother pump action, etc.

The Remington 700 was my favorite rifle...until I shot a Bergara B-14. A 700 clone type action but better trigger, better stock, better extractor, better bolt stop/bolt release, and much better barrel.

The bread and butter products that kept Remington afloat for years aren't doing the job anymore, there are better designs for the same price out there. That along with Remington's poor quality production of their designs is why they are struggling. Hopefully they can change all of that.

I find it very encouraging that Remington is going through the effort to polish up their old designs. Even though I prefer the Winchester model 70 action over the Remington 700 the seven hundreds are much easier to work on and to make an accurate rifle from. At what could be said bad about an 870? It's darn near as reliable as an AK-47.

They rested on their laurels while others blew by them. To make up for it, they cut quality to try to keep their margins in place. I realize you can't sell a $1000 rifle for $800 and stay in business, but you can't always let the marketing types convince you that going cheap is the way to go. You have to put some engineering into it; at least keep pace with your competitors even if you're not surpassing them.

That's exactly what Winchester did when they brought back the pre-64, controlled round feeding Model 70, and more recently with earlier designs of their lever actions.

Absolutely right.

And they reduced, or stopped, quality control. You cut corners on manufacturing and you are more likely to have malfunction.
