17 fireball - 01/24/22 05:41 PM

Looking at getting one of these for a couple reasons
1 is being its easy on fur and 2 is the reloading components
Are cheap and available, any taught ideas on this cal?
Thx

Fun little round with emphasis on little. I do like the 17 Remington for up to coyote size critters out to 300 yards.

The Fireball is in-between the 17 Hornet and 17 Remington. Both those are effective on varmints so figure the Fireball will be as well

I was less than pleased with anything in the flat open country less than a 22 cal. Wind pushed them around bad in my experience.

Good luck, I finally ordered a Mach IV barrel from Pac-Nor 8 months ago and still waiting on it.

Had a 700 BDL in 17 Rem long ago, and loved shooting it for all sorts of varmint hunting. Amazing on big fat prairie dogs and rock chucks. Never should have gotten rid of it.

When Big Green first came out with the Fireball in 2007-08, I got a yearning for one so got a 700 SPS Varmint in 17 Fireball and it was an absolute blast to shoot fur with. The heavy 26" barrel was rock steady and recoil was so light that you could watch coyotes and bobcats literally die in mid-step!! They produced a ton of ammo for it, and cheaper than dirt to boot, so I bought 600-700 rounds. Only shot fur with it so lasted a long time. Nowadays, ammo is difficult to find and my big fat fingers don't reload those little 20 grain bullets well. If it were me, I would go with the 17 Rem again, and you can make cases out of the 223 which is plentiful now. 17 and 221 Fireball cases are hard to come by and expensive when you do find them. Loaded factory rounds are up around $3 now, I bet.

Good luck on your search, you'll love the little bugger!!!

You can make the 221 and 17 Fireball cases from 223 brass but it is a pain.

I think you can make both from the 300 BO and make it a little easier since the BO and Whisper are basically the same case and the Whisper is a 221 Fireball necked up to .308 inches.
