LEVER ACTION 22'S - 07/16/21 10:22 PM

Given that a Marlin Golden 39A & a Winchester 9422 XTR are in the same condition, which do you prefer and which will shoot the tightest groups? Thanks

The better target gun will almost always be the Marlin. The Winchester is much more fun to hunt with though. Im not a target shooter so I would go with the Winchester every time. Since it sounds like tight groups are what you are after I think your odds are better with the Marlin.

I have one of each. Over the years I’ve grown increasingly fond of the 9422. Light weight, smooth action, positive feeding. I might give the edga in accuracy to the Marlin, but have no hard data to prove it. It would kill me to have to choose just one to keep, but the light weight of the 9422 makes it almost perfect. That didn’t help you much, did it?

I have a marlin 39, it’s been a great and accurate gun..
I bought a Henry and it was far more accurate though than the marlin

I’m definitely no help, but all 3!

i have had both nd the accuracy edge was like others have said with the Marlin but the fun factor is with the Winchester ir at least that little trapper XTR that I had. Light weight and fun.

Accuracy edge though was about 1/2 inch larger groups at 50 yards with ammo that they liked though the Marlin was a little less picky.

Henry action will be smoother though from my limited experience with them in general terms.

For top accuracy, I bought a Tikka T1X. The 39A stays in the safe. The 9422 is for turtles.

What’s said above on accuracy;; but, but, a 9422 is something really special. The bluing, the feel. One thing, look at the market price-that tells you what people think of the Win.

That’s a really tough decision. I love my 39a, but I’ve been fond of the 9422’s I’ve shot. I think my favorite of all time has to be the Winchester 62 pump action.

A clean old well honestly worn slick pump gun is a absolute riot!

Either one. Lever guns aren’t made for shooting groups. They’re made for shooting small game and beer cans!

Yep! The most cherished gun in my safe is my old Rossi youth pump 22 that I got for Christmas when I was 7 yrs old. Love shooting that thing.

My old 62A fits right in my hand. Worn spot on the barrel from some other, unknown man's gun rack in his pickup. Pretty darn accurate for an antique.

I have leveraction 22s in the safe but shoot the 62A a lot more than them even the 9422M or Henry or Browning lever action 22.

Not all 39A's are "golden". Mine is too old for that but it is a one year only "peanut" (1951). I would never consider the Winchester myself, but I like vintage Marlins. Added a '50's era Redfield peep to mine.

Huntmaster, I have not been able to find much on the Win., just what is market price on an 9422 XTR mag.

I’ve seen them as much as $1500 in normal times.. especially if it’s a new old stock gun without the safety lever

I’ve seen them $900 to $1500. Hunt the heck out of pawn shops. Look close at the finish on the Win, it is a much better quality finish. If you do get one, wipe it with oil always after the day is done. It is sensitive.

I have the Marlin, no need for the other choice.

A lever 22 is about the most rimfire fun folk can have. I have a Henry, my cousin has a Marlin. I've never seen the 9422,

I've got Winchester and Marlin 22s. I prefer this 110 year old Marlin.

Re: LEVER ACTION 22'S - 07/18/21 02:15 AM

My Henry is the smoothest operator of them all. It's just "slick," all the time, with every throw of the lever. My other levers, not so much. I've taught my children and my grand children how to shoot with it. They have nicknamed it "HANK." "C'mon, grandpa, let's get old Hank out and shoot some cans or some turtles!" They've tried my Marlin and my Winnie, but Hank always is first choice.
