Gibbs Summit Scout Rifle

My Gibbs Summit is back from the gunsmith. He machined a scout mount for the rifle. These rifles were "remanufactured" on an SMLE action and chambered in 45-70 Govt. It is pictured with the 425-grain bullets of my design.

If I get drawn for a nilgai hunt in the refuge system, I will use it.

Very sharp. I'm a huge fan of shorter barreled carbines and I like a scout scope from time-to-time.

That’s a great looking rifle. What velocity are you pushing those 425gr to? Are you running any +p in it?
I have always loved the heavies pushed fast but I’m limited in my 1886.

I probably will start with a 35K PSI H335 load that I've been using in my Rossi Rio Grande 45-70 Govt. That rifle has a 20" barrel, the Summit a 22", so there will be a slight velocity gain. Not sure how hard I will push it from there. I used to shoot my Marlin Guide Gun at 40K PSI. I developed those loads with pressure trace equipment, but I'm not sure if I will be able to get a strain gauge on the barrel because of the scout mount. Might be able to do it without the forearm on the rifle.

I've been fiddling around with QuickLoad this morning. It looks like that with the cased filled to 100% of its usable capacity with the bullet seated at a 2.500" overall length, I would see about 1865 FPS at 39.5K PSI. That's probably a target to work up to and stopping point for me.

425 bullet at almost 1900 is good stuff.

This project has me thinking....as a modern version does anyone know if the Ruger Gunsite Scout can be converted to 500 S&W?

Idk if there would be enough bolt face available to handle that rim. I could be completely wrong.

A 45 Raptor would be pretty easy, and (almost) as cool.

A cheeseburger and a chocolate malt says that that load will punch clear thru your nilgai. He might not drop to the shot but it'll be an easy tracking job...just listen for the air whistling in and out of those holes!

Does anyone know of a reasonably priced bolt gun that could be converted to 500 S&W? I realize the 45-70 loaded with modern loads will outpace the 500, I like the idea of the 500 for novelty’s sake.

Yes, it shot very well. It will flat knock the hell out of a still target at 100 and 200 yards!

The 303 British is a 47.0K PSI cartridge. My SMLE based scout rifle starts getting tough to operate there. I think data for Marlin rifle chambered in the cartridge is a place to work, around 40.0K PSI. I've owned the 450 Marlin and there just isn't much gain it the extra pressure. There is a lot of pain associated with it tough.

Honestly, it isn't a rifle that I'm going to shoot very much. In the last couple of years, I've had some shoulder problems coming on very strong. This rifle isn't helping. I've just about stopped shooting my 444 Marlin (I have two).
