Lever action rifle - 02/24/20 07:17 PM

In the market to buy one. What I am looking for is a rifle that takes a beating and keeps on ticking . Mine is going to stay in my side X side. It's going to get banged around quite a bit . Any recommendations?

You can find Marlin 30-30 rifles used for a good price at times, I have seen some of those abused and still shoot

Another one of the posters had an issue with dirt dobbers building a nest in his barrel. I would suggest covering the end of the barrel if your going to leave it in the sxs.

I have a Winchester 94 30-30 that fits the bill. You can find 94s for all price levels on gunbroker.

Winchester 94 or Marlin 336 both 30-30.

Re: Lever action rifle - 02/24/20 08:41 PM

I have a Henry, Marlin, and Winchester, all being 30-30's. Henry has outstanding customer service but the finish on the barrel of mine is rougher than most. It looks as if it should have spent more time on the sander. It also seems the heavier of the three. The Marlin has the smoothest action but has some trigger creep. Many have recommended the Wild West Trigger to improve Marlins. The Winchester Model 94 has the best feel by far, but I wouldn't recommend a new one unless you want to pay about twice what you can pay for a new Marlin.

I’ve got two of the Win 94’s and really like them. The only drawback you might run into is that they eject from the top. Not an issue if you use the iron sights like I do, but causes a problem if you are wanting to mount a scope on it.

do any mentioned come with a synthetic stock?

And there's nothing any uglier than a side-mounted scope.

They make an angel eject 94.

Re: Lever action rifle - 02/24/20 10:13 PM

I wanted a 357 to go with my 357 but any non-30-30 caliber lever gun just got too pricey for a stumping around gun. I ultimately just got the cheapest Marlin 336 in 30-30. I can easily do a 1.5-2.0" group with a 2-7 scope at 100 yards with hornady leverevolution (or whatever) ammo. Less than $400 and I carried for a few years about half a dozen times. Never shot at any past about 125yds, maybe. It far exceeded my expectation at purchase.

Yep, the Marlin Dark series has synthetic furniture and a rail. Folks mentioning Winchester are crazy. Should fit your needs just fine.

Do you have one of the newer models with "micro-groove" rifling or an earlier version? Like others have reported with the newer Marlins, my 336 produced horrible groups with the 160-grain Leverevolution ammo.

Rossi 92 comes in stainless. You can't get a synthetic stock, but I don't know that you'll need one. Get a skinner peep sight for it, and you won't need a scope. I love mine in 357.

There’s synthetic stock marlin with a rail and a threaded barrel in the cabela’s ad I got I’m the mail today but it’s all ready Been trashed.

I've never heard of this micro groove technique. I bought mine back around maybe 2008 or so. I'm guessing it was manufacturer several year before that. I haven't shot the rifle in a very long time since I don't really hunt all that much in the last few years. Honestly with the Hornady lever ammo, i was getting some groups closer to 1.0-1.25". The estimate i wrote was actually the largest groups I was seeing. Before the Hornady ammo, i was shooting 150gr whatever (the federal blue box silver box winchester and cor-lokt) and none of those did any better than about 2.0" or so.

That sucks about this micro groove thing. The Hornady lever ammo is when I started carrying the rifle around because of the improved accuracy over the others.

Re: Lever action rifle - 02/25/20 09:19 PM

Thanks all for all your help. I choose to get a Marlin 336 .30.30. Not for any gun features, but $399 and bought it right then. It's not the compact but it will do me fine. Looking forward to shooting it this weekend. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a gun that sits in a sxs and in all kinds of weather. You guys steered me in the right direction. Thanks a bunch. Rossi would have been next on my list if I could have purchased it near work. Winchesters were way out of my league. They are proud of their lever action.

Re: Lever action rifle - 02/25/20 09:32 PM

Good choice and hard to go wrong with the 336. There is a reason it is one of the most popular rifles ever produced. I received mine 40+ years ago as a Christmas present from my folks. I can currently say that I shot my first deer, as well as my most recent (Dec/19 buck) with this same rifle. Not sure how much they paid for it back in the late 1970s, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Re: Lever action rifle - 02/25/20 11:01 PM

Congrats, that’s Awesome! You might want to put a piece of masking tape over the barrel since you plan on leaving it out in the elements. That dirt dabber story could have gone real bad in a hurry if it was not found. A little piece of tape can set your mind at ease.

Re: Lever action rifle - 02/26/20 02:05 AM

Good choice, sounds familiar. Now on a blued gun that will be outdoors get some Corrosion-X or Kroll and treat the rustable parts which will go a long way in protecting your investment and keep it functioning more reliably. It will not stop all rust but it sure delays it and protects in the elements repeated applications help a lot.

Re: Lever action rifle - 02/26/20 02:13 AM

I suggested a skinner peep sight on a model 92 rifle. The 336 is a good choice also. For what it's worth, I would suggest a skinner peep for the 336 as well. I have one on my 1895 (same action as a 336, but beefed up for 45/70). It shoots about 1 1/2 in groups with a scope, and about 2" groups with the peep sight. When you force your eye to look through that little hole, it does something even for old eyes to focus.

Re: Lever action rifle - 02/26/20 03:12 PM

When I said that I was going to keep the gun in sxs, I meant while someone is there. It's not going to live outside. It will be inside house when no one is there.

Re: Lever action rifle - 02/26/20 04:03 PM

Nice and congrats, welcome to the club.. They maybe ugly as sin and a bit heavy but man is it a great rifle to carry around without worries, including finding ammo in any town Wally world. I have a 2-7 but that was years ago. If I carried mine around more often then i think I'd like to switch to a 1-4x or 1-6x, something more like a tactical scope. I can shot mine with both eyes open at 2x, but even the 1.25x is easier to do quick shot acquisition.

Huh? Blued steel against a walnut stock right at 7 lbs? Personally, I would not call that ugly or heavy.

Oh, yeah. That would be uglier than refried sin. But still not as ugly as this one.

Nope, i have the plain jane walnut version. It's actually stuff other people, primarily my brother, have said to me. It usually comes from winchester 94 owners. It just makes me laugh is why i wrote it. i love my 336.
Oh, I i the tacticool ones too. I'm probably gonna get mine threaded and shortend one day. I might even get one of these tacticool lever guns.

As soon as we get to our place this goes on the Mule and stays there until we go home. It has been a very handy setup and is completely out of the way.
