257 Wetherby Mag

257 Wetherby Mag - 12/12/19 03:56 AM

Hello, first post for me on the forum here, though I’ve gotten a lot of useful information on here over the past several years. I’m fixing to start the process of having a 7 mag rebarreled to a 257 Weatherby mag with a 26 inch barrel. I’ve wanted one for a long time simply because I think it’s an awesome round, while not necessarily practical for what I’ll use it for. So my question is what is a good bullet/load combo for deer anywhere from 25-250 yards? I understand it will kill deer way farther out there, but that’s where I’m comfortable and confident when shooting a deer. Thanks for the help

Your barrel twist depends a lot of what round is best for you. My wife’s 257wby did not like any modern off the shelf ammo, so I called Chad and had his custom relics made for it. I believe it was a 117 grain. Whatever it is, it works and it’s a freaking hammer.

I've got a Mark V Accumark and a Remington CDL SF, both like Factory Weatherby ammo. The Remington especially likes the 87 grain which I see they no longer make. They replaced that load with the 80 grain Barnes TTSX running just under 3900 ftps. They sell a 100 grains Spitzer and a Spire point, one of those runs about 42 to 45 dollars a box.Their 110 grain Accubond load looks like fine round also. The 120 grain Nosler Partition load is a great one if you decide to step up in critter size.

110 gr accubond load works fine on critters up to elk IMO and shot quite well from mine. THe 100gr Barnes TSX loads shot quite a few groups under half inch when I sighted in with it. Reloads the 120gr partition shot very well with Noslers max listed load using H1000 powder

I shoot the 110 grain accubonds in my .257. My gun likes them.

My line of thinking was in that fast a caliber a person needs a bonded or mono metal bullet.

I’ve killed a whitetail, couple of mule deer, two aoudad and a elk with mine.

You will like the round

Sorry was hunting. I’m happy with them

Over 3400+- a second I feel the jacket integrity is compromised and they become explosive on contact regardless of impact velocity(I could also had a bad batch). < and they are extremely effective. But the one caveat I will give is my shot placement. I’m not a heart/lung guy. Out of 100 plus animals I can think of only a handful that didn’t offer me a high shoulder or essentially spine shot that I actually had to track.

With that said I’ve also killed animals with just about every bullet offered OTC for the 257wby but the 117sst. They all work well, the 115vld just shines if you tend to push the 300+ Yard mark IMO

I had one(.257wby) and loaded extensively for it and found for my rifle that the 100gr Barnes TSX loaded .5gr under do not exceed using Reloader 22 powder was the best all around choice I found and it hit like Thors hammer...... I once killed 3 hogs with 1 shot at 100yds and the recovered bullet 93gr.

As BigPig stated about rifle twist - some of the old original .257wby had a barrel twist rate that would not stabilize lighter bullets.... this is why Weatherby will always offer the 117gr. round nose bullet. (believe its actually the Hornady 117gr RN)

For your distances 25-250yds - I would highly recommend the 117gr RN bullet, my cousin uses this round in his .257wby exclusively and its a KILLER round for hunting as I've witness many times over.
