Over/Under for $1000ish?

Over/Under for $1000ish? - 08/20/19 09:19 PM

I'd like to get a nicer O/U than the Stoeger Condor I have now. The gun would be used for hunting only. No clay shoots. What are the best options in the $1000 range? I know I could get more gun for the money if I buy used, but if there's a good deal on a new gun, I'd look at it too.

Tough call on that one.....Franchi will be closest but still $1300+. There is a huge gap in O/U’s between the foreign (Turkish and others) economy guns and the nicer guns. Personally I’d look for a good, used Beretta 682.

Winchester 101. I have both a 12 and a 20 and they're my go to shotguns for everything except geese.

I've seen some Japanese Brownings and somenRuger Red Labels in my price range. Are they better quality than the Turkish guns?

This. It’s a whole different class of gun than the Turkish guns. They are/were made in Japan I believe.

Stay away from the Turkish stuff. Go Beretta, Browning, Winchester, Ruger you'll be much happier down the road.

Yes. I’m assuming those were ‘used’. Of the two, the Ruger tends to have a bit more recoil than the Browning.

Just make sure you shoot before you buy if possible. For guns that are all very similar, there can be a great deal of difference in recoil from one O/U to another.

I just looked at a few Winchesters online. They look super nice. I'll probably post a couple of shotguns for trade in the classifieds and see what happens.

I'm more than pleased with my CZs. Current O/U inventory is a CZ Wingshooter elite 20ga, Beretta S55 20ga, CZ Redhead Premier 28ga. For me a mechanical trigger was a must after the firing pins springs failed time after time on the beretta. It's always CLICK CLICK with the CZ regardless of FTF of a dud shell or not.

There's a Browning Cynergy in the classifieds right now. Great gun. My son shot one for 4 years on his HS shooting team.

Well I'm not a box store fan but BP/Cabella's add has a Winchester M101 Field model o/u on sale just under $1k.

Go for the 101. My mother won one in a raffle last year. I don’t own a 12ga. I took it out one weekend and I killed 11 pointer wild quail before I missed with it. Two shots I think I would have missed with my old Superposed 20 because I wasn’t really on the bird. I like it a lot. My father was blind as a bat before his eye surgery last year and he even managed 2 dove over a tank before we limited out. I had to tell him what direction they were coming in. He could only see them when they were close enough to blow up. The model she won is very lite and it’s a keeper.

Look at a Weatherby Orion. Very nice gun for around 950.00

Agree...I’ve shot some skeet with one of those and it felt pretty dang good. I also like the 101...a lot. I’d love to have a sweet little 28 gauge O/U and it would be between those two for me. Let us know what direction you go up

Look for a gently used Browning Citori.

This or 686/687 Beretta

Either one is a notable step up from the Turkeys.

Best feeling shotgun I have ever handled was a Ruger Red Label 28gauge. If I ever drop $1k on a shot gun that's what it will be.

If it fits you well, the Winchester 101 is probably your best option for a new gun. That said, some of the greatest buys out there are Japanese SKBs (made under both SKB and Weatherby brands). The company never advertised much in the U.S. so its name recognition is lower than say Browning or Winchester. But talk to serious trap and skeet shooters and you hear great things about them giving the major brands a run for their money in terms of quality and value. I see them in the $800-$1000 range on a regular basis.

I just got a Turkish ou on GunBroker for $200... New. A yldiz knockoff I believe from a cancelled Dicks contract. It shoots straight at least but wasn't born for high volume shooting

Update: I just picked up a beautiful 1990s Citori from a forum member. Thanks, Stephen!
