Already have a rile in .270
Want to get another rifle, but not sure what to get.
I'd like it to be a rifle I can take elk hunting. My first thought was .308, but dang, its balistics are close to the .270
I'd like to replace the 7 mag I had, but don't know.

25-06, 6.5 creedmoor, or 7mm-08 would be my choices.

We've mentioned everything else, so I'll toss in the .300 WM.

If you’re going to be using it mostly in Texas and just an occasional elk hunt, I’d go with a 30.06. It’s plenty for elk too. If you plan to use it often for elk I’d go 300 win mag and I do enjoy my .338 win mag. (Just my 2 cents here)

Since you own a .270 get a .300 wm
Anything under that you might as well take your .270 to the mountains, as you wouldn’t be gaining anything.
Yeah, go big or go home. Most of the others are too similar.

338 Winchester Mag. or a 375 H&H. It's a lot of gun but works well on elk.
If you need something flatter shooting get closer.

I do believe I’d go for the 300 Win Mag. Load it up or load it down. Which rifle though?
But...maybe the 35 Whelen or the 338-06. No belt on those.

Do NOT buy anything based on the .30-06 case or smaller. That means some sort of magnum.

338-06 is my favorite non magnum big bore. First hand experience has proved it devastating with 210-225g bullets on anything it hits. If shooting past 250 or so this is NOT your cartridge. Funny how the 338 Fedral is now enjoying some popularity but the 338-06 never got recognized. If it was reintroduced now that the magnum craze is over I think it would shine.

Because the vast majority of rifles are offered in multiple calibers, I start with other factors when deciding what to buy. I like to start with what type of action I want to add to my collection, and then decide what brand and model. I like owning different brands of firearms, but like to stay with just a few calibers because it allows shooting the same ammo in different guns. If I had decided to add a specific caliber rifle, it would very likely be a brand that is new to my safe.
Seems like a 300 Win Mag would be a good compliment to a 270 Win.
