7mm-08 AR barrel, which manufacturer?

7mm-08 AR barrel, which manufacturer? - 06/15/18 04:04 PM

Lets say I was going to build am AR-10 in 7mm-08. Whom to buy a barrel from? Number ine priority is quality. I don't care about lead times, and price is not a huge factor as long as we don't get into double the price of other manufacturers.

A Google search led me to McGowen, but I know nothing about their quality. $265, and 10 weeks. Not bad at all, as long as it is a good barrel.

After doing a quick Google search I'd say kreuger or Wilson

lothar walther, shilen, douglas, lilja, bartlein, jp, wilson, rock creek, criterion, all good barrels but you might want to check out those lothars

I would get a white oak. Have one on a 6xc shoot .6 minute of angle

If I was really trying to go all out on an accurate AR barrel, I'd get a Bartlein barrel blank and have a gunsmith chamber, headspace the barrel and bolt, and attach the AR barrel extension.

7mm-08 is one of Dan Lilja's favorite calibers and know his son Adam used his Grendel AR on Montana and Dakota whitetails. They will do AR barrels or can have one made from blank btu cost might be prohibitive.

McGowen barrels I own one and have owned another. Decent barrels but believe you can do better quality wise.

Just called Kreiger, and talked to a very nice representative.

Kreiger only makes rifle length gas port barrels. And with rifle length gas ports, shorter than 20" they've found to not cycle reliably.

I can't decipher if he sells barrels only. 7mm-08 is not listed, but he advises to call.

Mine is a McGowen. They will make any length and gas configuration you want.

I went with a 20" Xcaliber and it freaking shoots! I was down to that or a McGowen.

I went with Craddock Precision for a criterion 6.5 Grendel barrel, based on positive things I’d read over at SH. Paul has been turning out Valkyrie barrels and uppers since that trend began, with some good results being posted on the Valkyrie threads.

I have yet to use this Grendel barrel, may or may not do that build so no firsthand accuracy experience. But it was delivered on time, heads paced to my individual bolt and looks great.

if you’ll look at his site he does make custom AR15, AR10 and DPMS G2 barrels. He lists 7mm08 as an option and uses criterion, rock creek, and bartlein blanks.

He runs a small shop and was very friendly when I talked to him.

my sons 6.8 has a WC barel and so does my brother and buddies 6.8s, and a 5.56

All are great shooters

Get whatever blank you want and get Craddock Precision to spin it up for you. Also worth the trouble to get an oversized barrel extension and get it thermo fitted to your upper.
