Wincherster Model 70 super grade W/maple stock opinion please! - 05/07/18 03:37 PM

Opinion needed! What’s the opinion of the Winchester Model 70 super grade rifle with the maple stock or any variant of the model 70 rifle? How do they shoot? How reliable are they, and how good is their quality? In other words are they any good.

I have a Standard Grade Model 70 that handles and shoots great. Excellent quality too.

My only issue with rifles with beautiful, high gloss stocks is their ability to show every scratch and nick.

They make a super grade with a heavy barrel? I’ll never forgive myself for getting rid of my LA 243 Win70 dipped in gameguard camo pattern. My Dad shot his first deer with it and I got short on funds a while back. Had to let her go to make it. Somebody in the Irving area has it. I’d pay a finders fee for info! Lol

I think the 70’s are dang good guns. Very under rated actions in terms of strength too. I love the safeties on them too.

For an off-the-shelf all around hunting rifle, it's hard to beat a Model 70. I have several, and all but one, a pre-64, are living in aftermarket synthetic stocks to preserve the original wood. IMO,the M70 has all the right stuff.

I’d certainly own a M70 but I prefer an oil finish like on the Sporter.

Love them !!!

Love the Super Grades !!!

Cabela's Allen had a few really pretty ones, also Elk's castle in Ft Worth

Go on Gunbroker and shop for pretty wood. Some distributors will send you pictures stocks but most wont.

I've owned a Pre-64 in .243, shot .75" with factory ammo. I also had an Extreme Weather in 7mm-08, It took a little longer to find what it liked in factory ammo, ended up with Barnes Vortex of all things

Some absolutely love the maple, some don’t.

I was very intrigued by it at first, but not so much now.

To me, maple is at home on a classic from the 1960s or 70s...

Hard to beat oiled walnut for raw beauty.

OP, I think the M70s are great guns, even though I don't own a single one.

I have been hunting with Model 70's for well over 50 years. I have 10 in various calibers and configurations, including Pre-64 and Super Grade. All are excellent shooters. Featherweight model 270 is my favorite for all around hunting. You can't go wrong with any Model 70, it is definitely the "Riflemans Rifle"!!

After asking your opinions about this rifle. I got to shoot a Winchester M 70 super grade with a maple stock in a 30-06 caliber with a Leupold VX3i 3.5-10 40mm scope on it at a range and store south of Ft Worth. It’s a great shooter, and with the right ammo and along with a good marksman you could make a good and fairly tight grouping. The smooth bolt action is really nice, along with a three way safety is quite nice indeed! The maple stock is jaw dropping; it kind of makes you not want to even touch it. One nice thing about it is, there’s no plastic on it yeah! That’s nice for a change. One of the employees told me, that if there are not enough of them ordered and I guess it depends on what caliber, the manufacture want produce that caliber until the following year with the maple stock and that stock maybe a limited run, in another words there going to produce them for a limited time only, and several people told me this as well. This rifle shot well using Remington 150 GR core-lokt.
Winchester is now owned by the Olin which I guess own or in partner with Browning and FN. If you look on any Winchester rifle’s barrel, you will see it’s made by Browning especially made I guess from 2005 and later. This rifle is of air loom quality and it is taken care of, could be handed down to the next generation. Lone Ranger you got it right. It is truly “the rifleman’s rifle”. I might just end up with one.

Yes, some guns are a capital investment, while others are just an operational expense.

If only I could the wife to understand that.
