Name the factory barrel

Name the factory barrel - 03/06/18 08:08 PM

This is a factory 7 mm rem mag barrel. Wall thickness is .174 and .198. Can you guess who made it. I thought I would shorten it to play around with in the off season. I don't think its worth it now. It was a take off barrel i had sitting around, so no big loss.

Does it rhyme with ravage?

Re: Name the factory barrel - 03/06/18 08:20 PM

My guess would be Remington as everyone here hates Remington lol.

I hope for the sake of JG's head that it isn't a Tikka.

If it is, they need their throat punched.

First name that popped in my head.

In all honesty, their QC is terrible and I do think they're the most likely.

Savage and Tikka both seem unlikely. Even though savages can have feeding/ejection problems, I think they build a pretty good barrel.

I’d say Remington since they are the most common take off barrel around.

Remington is my guess

I never shot it. Factory crown looks normal.

Wow, that’s very surprising.

I bet if you call them, they’ll send you a new one. One is bound to slip through once in a blue moon.

Re: Name the factory barrel - 03/07/18 01:31 AM

I never shot it. I pulled the barrel and its been a 257 wby for 3 or 4 years now. I bought it used. I bet they had trouble with it as it warmed after the first shot.

Edit... Looks like I was slow at my posting.
Sorry.

Did you or anyone else ever shoot with that barrel?

If so...
How did it group?
Was there any attempt at a load development?

Re: Name the factory barrel - 03/07/18 01:49 AM

This is interesting. I had a savage model 10 about 3 years ago that when after boresighted, the POI was about 5’ (feet) to the right at 100y. The full range of windage adjustment on the scope was just enough to get it close to zeroed. After verifying all the usual suspects, I called savage.

Savage told me to send it in, and they sent me a new rifle. Seems the rifles would be about the same age, wonder if it could have been the same problem?

I don't know. I bought it used from a gun shop.

I don't know the age of the gun. Its new enough to have an accutrigger tho.

I’ve seen Morgan at class3machining thread much worse, he had one last yr it was as some Russian surplus type rifle the bore was way off center and still was able to thread it for a can without baffle strikes lol.

I remember reading an article about rifle bores not being perfectly straight due to slight bends in the bit. It was talking about making sure the chamber was concentric with that end of the bore and the same with the crown. I wish I could find it.

Re: Name the factory barrel - 03/08/18 06:45 PM

i have a savage 6.5x284 that looks similar, but it shoots true, i did use up most of the windage getting it setup tho.

Re: Name the factory barrel - 03/08/18 06:48 PM

Once you fired it a few times and got the barrel heated up, the stress in the metal would cause major POI shifts, or the shot string to walk on you.

Being mass produced rifles I wonder how many from all different manufactures look the same?

I'm curious too because most factory barrels are not removed and the owner may never know.

I'm planning on rebarreling my savage in the near future. Has me wanting to cut the barrel in half to see... but I really wanted to keep the barrel so I could put it back if I wanted to.

It just occurred to me that this is probably why Leupold makes those windage-adjustable bases roflmao

Re: Name the factory barrel - 03/09/18 01:00 PM

Every barrel maker has barrels like that, you just can't tell without cutting the barrel length off.

It's pretty hard to drill a perfectly straight hole in a piece of metal over 2 ft long.
