Winchester Model 70 Made in 1972 - Looking For Value??? - 02/01/18 03:08 PM

Hey, I have a nice Winchester model 70 in 243. From the research I have done, it was made in 1972. It is the standard model, not XTR or Featherweight. Just says model 70. Wood stock & blue finish. Gun is in great condition, very minor "oops" marks on it. Looking for info on what it is worth. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

I would put the value at between $350-$450, depending on the buyer and how long that you wanted to keep it up for sale. It is a good, usable shooter, but it doesn't have any collector's value nor is it in a rare caliber.

Good luck on your sell. They are an underrated gun.

I'm no pro, but $350 sounds real cheap to me.

Google is your friend. This is from 2016 Gun's Digest, but it would be close:

1972 Model
VG-$300
Excellent-$400
Perfect-$500

Check gunbroker.com's completed auctions for similar rifles where a sale avtually took place. I wouldn't take any Blue Book value before seeing what the market has actually done. Those values are too low.

Rifle with no scope, I think you might get $350 -- maybe. You can buy a new Ruger American that is almost sure to be more accurate for about $350, can't you?

That year model had the impressed checkering, IIRC. I wouldn't own a rifle with that stuff, so I'd have to restock, which is another $400. Some people might be okay with the checkering, though.

Yal ever see good looking big name Winchester/Remington/ruger etc. wood stocked guns in good condition listed on here for anything near 350? I sure don't, id buy a lot more of them if they did.

I'd rather have a decent quality older blued / walnut rifle with some wear over new plastic stock entry level rifle - even if the new rifle shoots a little better. Personally I look for guns built in the 70's fr 2 reasons. #1 they are not all that collectible and so not generally overpriced as your pre-64 stuff and #2 because that time period was when I was growing up. I'd say $400 give or take on value for op's rifle.

The cheapest one to move on Gunbroker that I could find went for $300. Ohhh---it was missing the bolt. If that rifle is in nice shape, it should bring over $450 easily. I think it should bring $525 if I am correctly i interpreting the description.

Here are some pics to help. Hopefully these upload correctly... I tried to make sure all the marks were shown. Oh & Scope will probably be coming off.

As I stated earlier, those are generally, good shooting and under appreciated rifles. Looks to be in excellent condition. As you can tell, people are all over the place on their price. Pull the scope, put it up for $500 or so, and see if you can get some bites. If it doesn't sell, then you know that you either have to drop the price, or put it back in the safe. You have nothing to lose by starting out on the high side of estimates. You can always come down in price if you need to.

Best of luck to you on your sale. While it's not a "collector", it certainly looks like it would make a good addition to someone as a "shooter".

Looks nice, I'd say $500 is fair. If that was mine I'd have a hard time letting it go.

I'm interested if you do decide to sell it.

Yeah, It is a nice rifle, I just have others I shoot more often and this one. I guess I will throw it up for 500 and see what happens. Thanks for all the input.
