AR 10 off the shelf

AR 10 off the shelf - 01/17/18 09:43 PM

Would like a semi-auto to pig hunt with. Only semi I have is a Belgium made BAR 270 and it aint gonna get used. Been using my 308 BLR or 6.5 creedmoore x-bolt but would like to mount Photon on a semi rather one of these 2 guns. So I am trying to keep cost down somewhat since I have never owned an AR of any sort. Maybe build a nicer one someday if it turns out I like the gun. Would strictly be used for hogs and varmints once or twice a month. Like to fish too much and it will be warm soon.

Any off the shelf or better recommendations mucho appreciated. I figure .308 since I already have bb's for it. What barrel length also because I would like to add suppressor down the road.

Thanks

You can get a DPMS for pretty cheap compared to other brands. I own a CMMG and have had zero issues with it. As far as length goes I would go as short as possible (16").

Lower:

Total $579.98. Don't know that you can beat that.

I bought a DPMS lr 308. Its ok but there were a lot of parts I did not like so I replaced them with top of the line stuff and put a nice scope on it. now i have about $1700 in it when i only bought it for 700.

I vote build one. You can do it for less than 800 with a couple of premium parts. I think you can safely go cheap on lower, stock, handguard, and grip. Go premium (or atleast better than milspec) on trigger, barrel, and bcg.

I agree with texflip, go premium on trigger. A single stage 3.5lb cmc trigger would be perfect for what you are building. And primary arms has them for $169 right now I believe. I think if you spend $350 on trigger and barrel you can put the rest together for $450 pretty easily.

I’m no expert, I just got my first AR, but for the last 3 weeks I’ve been reading AR stuff basically non stop. That seems to be the general consensus on “budget” guns.

But yours is probably more accurate (stainless barrel), more compatible with AR-15 platform accessories (many more options) like triggers, and comes with a suppressor mount installed from the factory. Pound for pound, I think the G2 Recon is about the best buy out there, even going against a $600 PSA gun.

DPMS Hunter Lite, change the stock and trigger, and you are good to go.

For $1200 for the rifle plus $200 for trigger and $100+ for a stock, he can build an exceptional rifle.

Why do AR-10 rifles cost so much more than AR-15? You can buy an OTS AR-15 for like $400-$500 from Ruger, S&W, DPMS, etc.

Different parts with less demand.

Sorry I really disagree here. If he's never owned an AR, the dollars saved aren't worth the learning experience.

I bought a S&W M&P 10 as my first, buy once, cry once.

Dang... after I posted this I decided to go see how much they're selling for now, this is almost half of what I paid for mine in the crazy days of 2013.

Yes it is. If you are new to the building game I would go this route. Always build in cost of your time and tools needed for the task.

It’s not about saving money. It’s about getting more for your money. Most budget factory rifles don’t have nice stocks, handguards, or triggers. For the same money you spend on a rifle off the shelf, you can put one together with better parts. And I’d bet there are plenty of guys here willing to help out and even help assemble when the time comes. Even if he just built the lower, with the trigger he wanted and the stock he wants, he could buy an upper (the PSA one would do fine) but there are other budget uppers out there) and put it together very easily.

The only downside to a built AR is they don’t always hold their value like a factory rifle does. I ended up buying a built AR for a lot less than I could have bought the parts for it. I was going to build, and came across a good deal. I just don’t think you really get your moneys worth out of a factory AR unless you just really don’t want to build, and don’t mind “meh” ergonomics.

The above two comments contradict themselves. If you can buy a new S&W M&P 10 for $899 to shoot a hog, why would you ever want to cobble together your own? Take it out of the box and shoot. He's not looking to do 800 yd competition shooting.

That only applies if you intend to resell. Maybe a poor word choice. For $900 he could he could build an AR-10 with with a match barrel and a really nice trigger. Why would you spend the same $900 for a milspec barrel and milspec trigger. That’s my point. Lots of guys are happy with their factory guns. I’ve got no problem with that. Factory guns are easy, you buy and shoot. They also generally have some warranty that you don’t get with a built AR. I’d rather spend the same money on the best parts I can within that budget.

Shoot, he could buy that PSA lower and upper and still have $300 to buy a velocity trigger and a $200 barrel. He could likely sell the PSA barrel for $50

PSA's Ar10 is a quality gun. Don't let the price tag fool you.

Re: AR 10 off the shelf - 01/20/18 09:18 PM

I really appreciate all the info. i think everyone's points are validated. Is it about the money? Nah, not really. But not ever having shot one before, i'm hesitant to get too far out there, but I dont mind buying quality. Yes, I'm sure someone can build me quality also. I dont think there is a right or wrong here, just personal preference. Spinning reel or bait caster? We can debate it all day and all of us make good points. It's probly in my best interest to have someone show/teach me how to handle this type of gun properly just to see if I will even like it. Balance of the gun keeps coming back up as something to really get used to. It may be I just dont like the feel.

Again, everyone's input is valuable. Thanks guys

I've seen reports of shooters getting sub-moa groups easily.

Please share those reports if you can. I'd be all about a sub-MOA gun for that price.

I haven’t. I know alot of people are happy with them, but I don’t see many people posting consistent sub moa groups with PSA rifles. Maybe A sub moa group, but not consistent.

Yep, and those that don’t are a “tack driver”, as long as “I do my part”.
