Sighted in my remodeled slug gun

Sighted in my remodeled slug gun - 12/07/17 08:18 PM

It's a 20 gauge express youth model. I added a slip on recoil pad to increase length of pull, drilled and tapped the receiver to take a model 7400 scope base, installed a remington rifled slug barrel and an old Weaver 4X with a post reticle. I despise the funky rail scope mount that comes on these barrels and that is why I installed a scope base on the receiver. Added a sling and I am ready to go. I have 8 boxes of the old Remington BuckHammer slugs, one ounce at 1500 for the 2 3/4 inch and 1550 for the 3 inch version. 4 boxes of each. I also have 4 boxes of the Federal 2 3/4 inch 7/8 ounce sabot slug. I used the 3 inch BuckHammers to get on paper as I want to hunt with the 2 3/4 inch BuckHammers. Wow the difference in recoil is definitely not worth the extra 50 fps! I got it centered at 100 yards with the shorter BuckHammers and got 4 inside of 3 inches, cold and windy today so I am good with it. I shot a couple of the Federal rounds and am really surprised at the lighter recoil and that they hit just a hair lower than the BuckHammers. So now I have a relatively light slug gun ready to go after deer season for hog. Can't wait.

Have done some hunting with 12 gauge slugs, they pack a wallup.

Many years ago, the first deer I shot with a firearm was with a slug from a single shot 20ga. The initial reaction to impact was most impressive!

Have a Mossberg 12 gauge slug gun, and it kills on one end and maims on the other. Keep us posted on the 20 gauge performance, as I may move that direction also.

Pictures of what, a beater youth 870? Or of 4 big holes in a paper plate?

Well I found a new in the package Limbsaver pad in my stuff area that said for wood 870 not express. I went about taking the slip on pad off and the original rubber pad that came on the youth express was as hard as it can be and still be called rubber. Kind of reminded me of the firestone tire that threw a chunk of rubber through my 1976 Corvette fender. The slip on was from KMart and it was also junk. The Limbsaver fit but the express buttstock is a bit wide in the middle and I don't mind. I sort of errored when I drilled and tapped the receiver by putting the holes for the base a bit far forward but this seems to have fixed itself when I removed the slip on pad which had to be taped on so it would stay in place. If all goes well this gun will get some use during the "Holiday antlerless season" in Oklahoma this year.

I decided I hadn't had enough abuse so I did some testing to find out if the 2 3/4 or 3 inch BuckHammers shot better. The limbsaver pad made a lot of difference as to recoil and there was no clear winner between the two loads, they even shot pretty much to the same POI. The federal Saboted 7/8th ounce load shot poorly.
