PSA 308 not firing

PSA 308 not firing - 12/07/17 03:54 AM

Dad’s PSA AR10 308 has decided to piss me off and stop firing. It sounds like the hammer is still hitting the firing pin with good force, but there are zero firing pin marks on the primer. We took the bolt apart prior to hunting because we had a blown primer and there was quite a bit of powder in the bolt. Everything cleaned, oiled, and put back together. Firing pin and everything moves freely.

What gives?

I was trying to line of 3 turkeys this weekend and it decided to fail to fire. If it wasn’t dad’s gun it would’ve been hurled at the turkeys I was so mad.

Did you inspect the firing pin tip? Was the BCG fully engaging into the receiver? Got a pic of the dented primer?

Re: PSA 308 not firing - 12/07/17 01:24 PM

So gun was working fine. You had a blown primer, took the bolt apart, cleaned it and put it back together and now gun doesn't work.

Whenever something mechanical is giving me problems I look at the last thing I did to it as the first source of problems.

I see two strong possibilities.

1. Your blown primer damaged the tip of the firing pin causing light strikes.

2. Something in your bolt stripping and cleaning was not done correctly. Either you still have some powder, and bits of metal in the firing pin channel, (my strongest suspicion is that you still have a small piece of primer in there blocking things) or you put something back together incorrectly. (and knowing AR BCG's like I do I can't think of how you could do that and still have the firing pin moving freely.

With the BCG out of the gun can you press forward on the back of the firing pin and see how much protrudes from the bolt face?

My bet is the firing pin retaining pin was installed before the firing pin.

Yep this is where I'm leaning. If the firing pin is moving freely as in not staying in place, the pin was installed before the firing pin and its not allowing the firing pin to go as far forward as it should. Was waiting for a pic, but this is what I'm leaning towards.

The blown primer raises my red flag. Lots can cause problems from this.

The rifle in question was in Sherman Friday afternoon. I suspect that was close enough roflmao

You'd be surprised just how little it takes for Jason to mess up a gas gun. rofl

Yeah, and I made this a few weeks ago. (Not sure why it's sideways)

I’ll look at the bolt and try to post some pics. It was factory Hornady ammo that blew the primer

Gotta wonder if there's something else going on with the gun, in that case.

I've had Hornady factory ammo blow primers in 22-250 & 308, both were bolt guns.

This gun is 3 years old. Has always had an adjustable gas block, and has always shot this particular round from Hornady. Haven’t had a chance to look at the gun yet, maybe tomorrow

The more I read, the more I think the misfire problem is an incorrectly assembled BCG.

If it was incorrectly assembled what would I look for? It blew the primer during a rage session and I didn’t know it until a few rounds later when It stopped firing. Packed it up and took it home. Took the bolt apart and cleaned it, reassembled and test fired opening weekend. It worked just fine. This isn’t my first time stripping and cleaning a bolt.

I've seen Hornady load at maximum, more than once. Back when I bought centerfire ammo, I had brand new Hornady .22-250 split necks on the first firing.

So it’s an ammo issue... go shoot something else through the rifle.

Had it looked at, best we can figure is the hammer spring. If you place your finger in front of it and pull the trigger, there is almost no pressure when it hits your finger

Re: PSA 308 not firing - 12/12/17 10:00 PM

That would be an easy fix.
