20 year old Remington 870 Magnum 20 gauge pump

20 year old Remington 870 Magnum 20 gauge pump - 10/03/17 12:11 AM

I have this gun I was given when I was in middle school. It hasn't been shot in 15 years but I'm getting back into hunting and was planning to use it for dove. The problem is the barrel is REALLY short. It's not in my possession but my dad says it is 24" at most, maybe even 20", which would be difficult for dove. If anyone is familiar with this model gun, can I get a 28" barrel? I've looked online and Google isn't giving me many hits so I'm not sure it's possible.

They have a configuration from the factory with a 28" barrel, so I would think you should be able to get one...

Should not be too difficult to find. As long as it has the Remchokes a short barrel can work fine for dove. the extra weight just helps not stop the swing.

I have shot straights with 20 inch barreled guns on the skeet field numerous times.

Looks like Numrich has one that is modified choke 28" for less than $100

First, let me be the first to welcome

Second, if the short barrel doesn't balance for you, buy one used, buy one new or buy a clone. Any and all will work. Good possibility a 20"-24" barrel might be an open cylinder.

24" barrel is standard on youth shotguns. If your barrel is at least 24" I'd just go hunt with it.

Well I got confirmation it is only 20". I don't know if it's a youth version or not since I can't see it myself at the moment. I see some barrels are made for different models, so not really sure what I'm looking at... Let me know if you recommend any places to look for another barrel. I'm almost thinking if I need to spend $100-200 on a barrel alone for an old gun just to spend more and get the Stoeger M3500...

If the barrel has screw in chokes (Remchokes), 20" is fine. As kmon pointed out, a longer barrel helps with follow through, but a 20" barrel loses almost nothing else in performance. In a hunting gun I would prefer a barrel that is a couple inches short vs. a couple inches long. P_102

It does have the screw in choke. I only thought 20" was short in theory because I shot a 28" 12 and a 24" O/U this weekend. I was very accurate with the 28" and felt like the O/U was too short to be accurate. Maybe that's more the difference between O/U than it is a length issue? Thanks for the responses.
