AR-10 extractor

AR-10 extractor - 04/23/16 12:01 AM

I need some advice. I have a DRD ar10 that I thought was going to be the best gun ever. Well turns out it's has plenty of issues. The biggest issue is that it will not extract casings while fireing. They flip inside of the action and get slammed with the new round coming in. Sometimes they literally do an about face and get caught by the bolt backwards. I have tried a heavier buffer spring, and a heavier buffer. Also tried stronger Extractor spring. Nothing is working.

Another thing is that I am suppressing this gun when I shoot it. But it happens with or without suppressor. Seems to me that I need a more aggressive extractor. Maybe a higher quality bolt..

I have sent it back to DRD. And they sent it back with no report of what they did to fix anything. Seems to kick harder so I am thinking they put in a heavier buffer spring. Also I have taken it to a gunsmith... Now I am asking you. What can I do to make this thing work properly???

Odd. Do you have an adjustable gas block? I could maybe understand an over gassing with the suppressor but not without. Have you checked the ejector plunger?

worked on the extractor, have you looked at the ejector?

spring? maybe take out and make sure it is not hanging up?

they flip inside the action, that is one amazing piece of brass

have you tried a different BCG?

interesting

try to borrow a bolt carrier group to possibly eliminate that in the equation. If you can borrow one let them try your BCG in their rifle also. It could also be under gassed. I've found that the LR-10 seems to do better with a adjustable gas block. With a adjustable gas block I've also opened the gas port with a 1/16th drill bit. Be sure to clear the barrel after the drilling. Another thing is to make sure the bcg is well lubricated, dry bcg's can cause real headaches.

Man that sure sounds like a ejector/ejector spring issue to me. I would pull both out and clean the channel real good and look for any weakness in the spring. Clean/lube/reinstall if all looks good. Extractor seems to be fine if its pulling the case from the chamber. If its not kicking free of the ejection port I would focus on the ejector/spring first since that's its job.

My Ar -10 in 243 had some feeding issues when it was new . It either would not feed or the bolt would close on a half chambered round . I called the mfg. and they said clean the BCG and put a good amount of 2 cycle engine oil as ar-10 rifles need to be heavily oiled. I followed their instructions and I keep the bolt well oiled an no issues since then it has about 200 rounds fired now.

Also, make sure your scope and/or base/rings are not getting hit as the case comes out. I have seen several rifles hit the windage knob and go right back in opening. Have someone watch the ejection as you are shooting to see what's really happening.

I have an AR-10 that was doing the same thing. The spent case was backwards and on top of a fresh round that was trying to be chambered. The rifle was so over gassed that the empty being ejected would hit the shell deflector and bounce back in through the ejection port while spinning 180*. I installed an adjustable gas block and the problem went away!! A lot of AR's in 308 are over gassed so I'd start there.

$3200 rifle? Send it back to DRD again. When I pay that kind of $ for a gun I dont want to do all the legwork to figure out why its not working.

Man, I am right there with you - Jeepers. I am going to keep messing around with it but it's starting to get to me a little. Going to shoot it today. So I will keep you all posted. Thanks for all the advice.

Update-

Thanks to everyone for their advice and trouble shooting. So I think that I have gotten it working. I buffed the BCG and specifically the end that the butt of the bullet snaps into (ejector and the little spring loaded pin to the left of the ejector). I also buffed the barrel where the tip of the bullet slides into the chamber. Lastly, there was quite a bit of damage that had been caused by multiple rounds scratching and gouging on the interior of the breach where the BCG slides back and fourth buffed that as well...

So, Some combination of all of that seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks again and hopefully to the guy in the future that finds this thread, this helps you out as well..
