savage 99

does anyone have and use one one the savage 99. are they pretty good rifles as far as not breaking down. can you still buy parts for them. are they pretty accurate.

I bought my first 99 a couple of years ago, 300Sav. It's quite a rifle. I really appreciate the design, considering it's from the 19th century! Balances well, carries well, plenty accurate. I really enjoy carrying it and hunting with it. Try it....bet you will like it! ;-)

I have two (2) Savage 99's

One is a Savage 250-3000 caliber made in 1915-1916 shoots very well

and the other is a savage 300 caliber made in 1932 both are takedown models...

There are very well made and their design is way ahead of their time...

I have one in .300 Savage and it is a fantastic rifle.

I've got one in .250-3000. It's fantastic. I don't hunt with it anymore as I refinished it last year, and ammo has gotten expensive for that particular caliber. But I have no doubts it would easily give me another 50 years if I needed it to. I don't know about parts because they dont break.

I have had a few over the years and liked them all. My favorite is a 99F in 300 Savage – carries perfectly, shoots well and just feels classic. I have had some of the 99Cs (clip fed model) and didn’t like them as much. To me it felt like towards the end of production Savage was trying to make the 99 more “boltish” with a Monte Carlo stock, heavier forearm, etc., and lost that great 99 feel in the process. Still a good gun, but different.

I have had some problems with mine and fortunately parts were available. But this is becoming a real problem so some repairs are going to require customer parts and high prices.

I really like them but do not own one.

I have heard you need to be careful shooting full power loads in some of them, may look into that.

Rock Solid guns. I have one in .300 Sav that I inherited from my wifes grandfather. Manufactured in the late 40's. Take it out at least once a year to shoot a pig or deer with it. Old gun has dozens of elk and mulies to it's credit. My son took his first deer with it. I'm sure my grandkids will shoot it some day as well.

I've never owned one but a friend of mine has one that shot sub-moa at 100 meters with 40 year old ammo. Made up my mind right there to own one.

I got one recently that my dad had bought a few years ago..
I don't recall which 308 ammo he ran but he was said it shot 1/2" groups..

I have 2 on 243 the other 250-3000. The 250 is 61 years old the 243 is 55 years old. Killed a lot of deer, a few elk and several antelope with them. Great guns.

used parts show up on ebay & gunbroker, some models are know for better accuracy than others, some of the older models (early 1900's) might show bore wear. the R & RS models are known for accuracy, later R&RS were factory drilled for scope mounts, the first version of the model F is a very desirable model, in .308 in fine condition fetch around 800. I currently have 29 in various calibers, including the interchangeable .410 barrel that can be used on take down models

This topic is killing me, my Dad sold me his 99f in 243 in the late 70's. I never really thought of it as mine, it just was my dad and always would be. I left the rifle with him all the time and would shoot it a little every deer season until he loaned it to my ex brother in law. Come to find out the next deer season it was missing and was never to be found, I've been heartbroken for that rifle ever since.

if that was the lever safety model, it would be worth a bunch.

Bought my 99CD in .308 brand new in the box from Ewell Cross in Ft Worth about 35years (?) ago. Smooth as glass & no issues other than I carried it so much I finally had to refinish the stock/forarm.......It has never let me down!

I've owned a couple and they are great rifles. Nothing to add other than consideration for what cartridge it is chambered in. 284 Win, 300 Savage, 358 Win, and 375 Win are going tough to buy ammo or find the brass to feed them.

the one I was looking at is a 243 with a 22 inch barrel. no marks or scratches on it. I forgot to look at the model number safety on top

with the older style safety on the lever, you can decock, the tang safety you can not, the one you are looking at is usually reasonable in price, exactly the opposite with the lever safety

I have a gently used 99 in 308, love that gun, use it often for hogs. If anybody is in the Stephenville area, I have 10 round of 300 Savage ammo you can have for $10.00, in original Remington green Kleenbore box.

I have one in 250-3000. Was the rifle I killed my first buck deer with. Over 50 years ago.

Here's mine that I just refinished last year. Yes. I know. I refinished an old gun and destroyed the value. However, it's priceless to me, so the value means absolutely nothing.
