Project finished 7mm08

Project finished 7mm08 - 06/07/14 09:12 PM

Well completed latest project.
Savage, re-barreled with Criterion, 26", stainless, 1 in 9" twist, varmint contour, Choate Varmint stock, EGW base, SWFA scope mounts, Falcon Menace - 4 x 14 x 44 - FFP - MOA/MOA - Total Elevation Adj. Range 90 MOA

Did barrel break in last week.
Worked up loads, went to the range today.
Nosler 140 grain Ballastic Hunting Tip, seated .020 from ring lands, IMR 4064 started at 39.3 grains and went to 42.9 grains increasing 3 grains each time. Each test load had three rounds.

Hard to find a load that it did not like. Out of 16 different loads 13 were sub-moa. There were a couple of loads that had 2 out of three in the same hole. If I had to pick, here are three that were most consistent.

Here are three that it really liked.

Probably going to try some Accubond 160's but I just had bought 5 boxes of 140's for my deer gun so I thought what the heck.

If I can get a bone stock Tikka to do it, yours will have no problem.

Very nice!
I believe 140 grain bullets and the 7mm-08 were meant to be together.

Enjoy it!

I agree, I got pretty well the same grouping with my 7mm08 deer gun but it has a ER Shaw Sporter barrel with a 1 in 11" twist. Strange or not they both work well with the 140 grain Nosler hunting tips with IMR 4064 at 42 grains. Both were also done at different air temps, one at 50 an done at 85 degrees.

Re: Project finished 7mm08 - 06/14/14 07:29 PM

Well before I got to far along I needed to check out my scope to verify that it tracks well. The Falcon Menace - 4 x 14 x 44 - FFP that I purchased has had mixed reviews in the past but for a starter FFP scope I had to check it out for $359. Looks well made and glass is clear. Turret clicks are pretty sharp. I guess only time will tell if it will be a keeper or not. Since last time at the range, I decided to run the elevation and windage turrets max in and out then took to the range to verify that it was still on and would track. Had a couple of factory rounds to warm the barrel. Shot a couple of groups and then did my test. I probably should had taken more care as I shot but was just checking to verify that it would come close to re - zeroing in the end. All in all it did pretty well. Next outing I will load a batch of seven rounds each for the best three loads that I found last week at the range and pick a keeper.

Congrats GLC... looks like you got a shooter. Try some 120 Ballistic tips. I'm getting 1/4" groups with my 7mm-08.

Funny guy.
Even though the Nosler 140 grain was above parr, I am doing some more test loads on the Berger 168 grain to see what it will do at longer distances. Then maybe off to Fireman's place.
