i may be wrong but i think it works best where there is a good doe to buck ratio

i think rattling works as long as bucks have hard antler you see them "sparring" all the time pre rut, rut, post rut, up until they drop their antlers i think how agressive you get with your rattling will determine success. imo just a little light rattling cant hurt and will very possibly help early in the year. but you wouldnt want to sound like a sure enough @$$holes and elbows all out brawl out there, save that for the rut

Everyone should have something to believe in, I believe I will go hunting

I was rattling last year early into bow season and about 30 minutes after I stopped a big 10 walked in and out of sight within seconds and proceeded to beat up a tree about 30 yards away, all I saw was the top of the tree shaking for about a minute. Not sure is he was investigating the rattling or if it was just a coincidence.

I agree...one of the more important aspects of rattling. If there are numberous does available, rattling just doesn't seem to work as well. Where there is a lot of competition for them, the bucks get more aggressive, IMO.

Most of my sucess with rattling has been in the first two weeks of november and then late december... Never had any real luck with rattling during bow season.

I have had quiet a bit of luck rattling, but it has always been closer to the rut...usually around thanks giving. I have rattled a few in as early as october, but they were usually just curious smaller bucks.

I am about to start rattling. I have several good bucks sparring every eveing. Unfortunately they are always out of range. Possibly I can get them to come in closer to see how else is playing. I called one in on Wednesday night. He wasn't totally convinced so he stopped about 50 yards out and eventually turned back.
