All fall my son and I chased turkeys between deer hunts. We were unsuccessful, it’s hard to get a 5 year old to stay still with 40 eyes on ya. We went out this weekend, know we have missed the best part of the turkey season, but we had nothing else to do. We worked them hard Saturday, jumped a few randoms in the field, but remained defeated. As we were making a long loop around the place, he decided to ride in the back on the moldy corn and take a nap. I spotted movement through the trees and gave it a go. About 10 minutes later and a 110 yard shot with Heavy Coyote and a Full choke I finally knocked down a turkey, the kid stayed asleep. He was happy as could be when he woke up and all he talked about was how good the turkey dumplings are going to be.

Early Sunday morning, my long time best friend from grade school got them to gobble back and connected. Turns out Heavy Coyote in a modified choke at 60 yards isn’t very effective, but he was dead (eventually).

He found a cow bone that he was convinced was a heroes mask.

We made an arched entry to the “land of the unknown”. I call it that because you never know when or where you’ll find a mud hole or what you’ll find. This trip we found the horned lizard, a horse which doesn’t belong on the property, about 50 yards of fence washed away along with a portion of the road, and some other surprises.

Then we feasted! Jalapeno cheddar venison sausages, venison backstrap, sweet corn, and beans cooked over mesquite.

At some point in life its time to quit chasing the pot of gold and just enjoy the rainbow. FR

Roger that. Good country. Our place is about 40 west of Childress.

Good luck, just happened to me too. GFCI struck again and we lost three deer from this past season.
