Shot this dude Tuesday evening but could not find him. Was turkey hunting this evening and the buzzards were working hard so after my turkey hunt I walked to where all the action was and there he was.
He was with 2 other big ones and when I shot no jumping or other indication he was hit. He was pretty ripe and the flies were awful. The little hole was from the bullet and the buzzards did the rest.
Shot him with a .300 WSM using a Nozler 180 gr Accubond.

The physics of how they can sometimes show no reaction to the shot completely baffles me.

Never shot one yet that didn't squeal with the shot, if hit.

That is really interesting. I would have to say that the vast majority of hogs that I shoot don't ever squeal when shot. There are those upper CNS kills and throat shot hogs that cannot squeal and then LOTS of other hits where the hog does not squeal when shot.

I'd shot several that didn't squeal. Also often find some a day or two later, but I don't look too hard for them when there is a big sounder and we have 3 or 4 down already.

I'd estimate that about one in six or eight that I shoot squeal when hit. It seems most do not, but maybe my hearing is just that bad or the hearing protection I'm using (a day late and a dollar short) has something to do with it.

Most of the hogs I've shot over the years did not squeal. I'm generally able to sneak up to about a 70-80 yard range which, if I'm patient, allows a head or neck shot that knocks them out right away. If I can't go for the head or neck I'll try to shoot through the shoulder, which typically penetrates the lungs. When the hog has a hole in it's lung it is difficult for it to squeal.

1.
2.

The pigs I’ve shot in the CNS did not squeal, obviously. The ones that I’ve shot in the lungs/heart that die within a minute will sometimes give a death squeal. The ones I’ve shot that are not quickly fatal won’t make a sound. I don’t have proof but as I think on it, it seems like the boars will stay quiet and sows are noisy. Go figure.
