Looking for a scope that wont break the bank ($300-$600 range) for my 17HMR. Something that is gets up around 24 magnification. Have had some recommendations towards Athlon Midas Tac 6-24x50, which runs $350-$460 range. Wondering if anyone has one and their opinion and or if anyone has a better recommendation.

That Athlon scope would be an excellent choice in that price range IMO.

I put a Hawke 4-18x50 on mine. The scope is set for a 17HMR shooting a 17 gr bullet. Extremely accurate. I paid around 250.00 for it.

24X is a lot of magnification for a rimfire. Though the .17 hmr is capable of shooting out to 200 yds. (and a bit farther) accurately, I think you'll find it most useful and accurate at ranges between 75 yds and 125 yds. Do you have a special purpose for wanting such a high magnification? I use a 2.5 x 10 on mine and it is plenty out to 150 yds. I realize the above doesn't answer your initial question, just wondering if you might be able to purchase a better quality scope (and stay within your budget) IF your magnification needs are not so great.

Prairie Dog hunts, ranges can get up to 400-500 yards with rimfire. However, i do think 24x is over scoping. Probably going to go with a 3-16 to 18 instead.

I’m no expert but 400-500 yards seems crazy ? I’m very comfy with my run of the mill 17 and 200 dollar scope @ 75- 100 yards probably little further with some more practice . But Is that caliber capable of those kind of shots equipped with the right gear ?
