Howdy I am new to the Wendy Lou ranch, while I am use to wildlife some of the exotics are new to me. Out here we have a small herd of Capes while they don't like us to get to close which is understandable there is a young calf that I have been trying to determine whether it's a bull or heifer. Besides the obvious telltale signs of which sex it would be, does anyone know if they have any other signs that I would be able to identify from a distance of whether it's a bull or heifer? Or just waiting till things grow to determine what it is?

Watch for it to pee? I sure as heck wouldn't suggest lifting it's tale.

Watch for it to pee? I sure as heck wouldn't suggest lifting it's tale. Simple but effective. We've got some scimitar horned oryx on the place (low fence) that showed up back in September. Once I got a good look, I determined that they were three cows. A couple of months ago, one dominoes. After a bit, I caught the bunch out in the open and Junior relived himself. Plumbing don't lie.

Do you have good records on this herd? Did you do any hands-on deliveries, or all natural out in the brush?? Bull calves tend to be larger (20-40#), and have longer gestation periods. Should have been born later .

How’s the Wendy Lou doing these days? I see your account hasn’t posted since 2019, and some of us missed you. I did a hind hunt on the Wendy Lou a while back and thought your property exceptional. The hind was pretty tasty as well.

Funny but when I shot one of those in RSA they called it a Blesbok ![[Linked Image]](https://i.imgur.com/8clV0WT.jpg) Males have thicker horns with a white edge to the ridges on the horns and with more hook to them. This was my first African animal for what it is worth and it was shot to provide camp rations so we weren't after a trophy head. Saved the money for the trip after a year's duty in Diego Garcia when I was active duty USN. That last part is put in just to piss off a certain member who allows me to live rent free in his head. On another note I'd like to get a red deer hind off the WLR. I tried to do it a few years ago and Mike and I couldn't make it work with my schedule. Maybe this year it will?

He must be rent free in your head or you wouldn’t troll him. Who is it that you have a man crush on?

The hind was pretty tasty as well. It's been great, like I said I got hired in the past month to help the guys out here and mange the herds, also to keep to keep with this forum when I can since it's a great tool to ask questions and things. Well we are planning on taking a bunch more hinds and stags this year if you are interested again let us know.

Should have been born later . I haven't found any records containing the gestation periods of the females, definitely no hands on delivery it's all natural. Ok thank you for the tip.

Ok thank you I will take a look at the horns the next time I get to look at them. We have plenty of hinds to take off this coming year so maybe it will work out more this year and would love to have you out!
