Been watching it over the last few years and this time when I went to the doctor my numbers were bad. Glucose at 273 and A1C was 9.3. At 5’09” and 180 lbs, I’m not way overweight, but could probably stand to lose 10 lbs or so. After being on meds for 5 days, they are helping keep my numbers better, but man do they rip my stomach up. I’m hoping my body gets used to them soon cause I’ve got to double up the dose starting on Thursdaysick

Not really a huge sweet eater, but man do I love salts… bread, chips, burritos, pasta, baked potatoes, bread. Trying to adjust my diet and would love some suggestions that others might enjoy eating.

Thx

Ease up on all your favorites and other carbs and sugar. Been diabetic for years, throw in some exercise.

Cut out all the carbs and processed junk. Carbs are sugar....fatty carbs are like sugar x1000 once they enter your bloodstream. At your weight, you have the possibility of coming off the meds altogether if you eliminate carbs.
Steak, eggs, salads, cheese...if you get a craving, drink a bottle of water and have one spoonful of cream cheese. Two weeks of no carbs and the cravings will subside. If you cheat, don't cheat with dessert. The sugar craving lasts longer than any other.

Cut back a lot on carbs, since you like bread you could try sprouted grain bread in moderation as it does not have as many carbs.

Up the exercise if you can.

Some of the best advice I got is you will get cravings for chocolate or what ever, get a little and slowly enjoy a small amount of it will knock out the craving and if you do not do that one is prone to way over eat other things trying to satisfy the craving.

Most insurance will cover a diabetes education class go if they will.

Everything in moderation. Start slowly by cutting things in half especially carbs, write down what you eat , measure your portions so you know actual amounts look like - 1/2 cup vs 1 cup. If you drink coffee, eliminate sweet creamers. Cut back or eliminate sodas and alcohol. Learn to like vegetables, but don't salt or overcook. Does your wife cook, or do you? Consider 4 small meals instead of 3, so the gaps aren't as large. Watch your chloresterol levels if you start doubling up on oils, fats, or dairy like cheese or cottage cheese

So when I cut out most all the carbs my blood sugar dropped to low 80’s. I’m sure for most that’s okay, but caused me to feel like I was about to faint and really weak. Got the shakes and was not good. This happened yesterday and today about the same time… 5:00-6:30PM. Quickly downed a coke and a small snickers bar to get it back up. Which was not kind to my stomach.

I’m sure part of it is my dose is doubled now from what we started with. Definitely a puzzle to try and figure out what works best for me, but thinking I will try what blank said and just cut things down in moderation so I still have “some” carbs to keep the levels where things feel right. Tonight I had steak and a little bit of angel hair pasta. I find when my reading is 110’ish that I feel the best and don’t have headaches.

Thanks for all y’all’s help and suggestions. I know I’ll get it figured out. Going to start planning meals more and make sure to have some candy with me at all times so I can get the jump on it when the sugar starts to get too low. up

Good luck. A good friend suffers ups and downs like yours. Two things he found work for him are the little packages of Welch's fruit snacks and the natural unflavored almonds. The gummies taste good, and boost his blood sugar slowly without overshooting much. The nuts satisfy cravings, keep him busy munching on something, and don't have all the extra salt. Keeps your fingers clean too!

I think some people can get in the low 80's and are good with that number but I think other people can't get that low without feeling the effects. Myself,i'm a 110 type person and if I get in the high 90 low 100 I feel the same as you, a little weak and shakey as i'm making lunch.A bite or two and I start feeling fine again so I know.
Any drugstore even walmart has Glucose tablets that come in a small plastic cylinder container and don't cost that much.I keep one in the house and one in each vehicle just in case and I suggest you might look at these glucose tablets.
YOU said you started getting shakey around 5-6:30 pm then maybe a light snack around 3-4 pm, crackers or a piece of cheese maybe or fruit will stop it.

Coke and candy are complex sugars, and not the best things to use to raise blood sugar.

The best thing to use to raise blood sugar rapidly is orange juice, which is a simple sugar. If you want to keep food handy to raise blood sugar, apples are a great choice.

80’s should be ok. You’re probably getting used to having a normal glucose level after you have been living with a high glucose level for so long. Try not to treat until it’s below 70-75. Glucose tabs are the best. Take two and recheck ten minutes later. If you have to use a Coke, drink half the can and retest. A Coke and snickers will have you in the 300’s inside an hour.

From my doctor;

What to do if you think you have low blood sugar:
CHECK your blood sugar right away if you have any symptoms of low blood sugar. If you cannot check your blood sugar at that time, treat the low anyway.
TREAT by chewing/eating 5 glucose tablets.
WAIT 30 minutes and check your blood sugar again. If it is still low, chew 5 more glucose tablets and wait 30 minutes to check you sugar again. Once your blood sugar returns to normal, eat a proper meal or snack. This can help keep low blood sugar from coming back.
If you have lows 3 days in a row, at the same time of day, please call your Doctor's office to report the consecutive lows.

I called the doctor a couple days ago and she switched things up. Moved me from 1000mg of metformin 2x a day to just 500mg once a day, but in the extended release form. Seems to be helping a lot. Stomach isn’t as upset either. Appreciate all the help as I learn a new normal.
