Random Tuesday Post
Been seeing a lot of press lately concerning the animal and there is still some discussion over what the proper term is for this iconic Bovine.
Do you subscribe to the once popular term "Buffalo" or do you prefer the more politically correct term "Bison"?
I personally prefer Buffalo. We all know it's not a true Buffalo like a Cape Buffalo or a Water Buffalo, but that matters little in real world terms.
If you do prefer the phrase Bison, do you also refer to Elk as a "Wapiti"?
Lets discuss
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

If Bison is politically correct terminology, then it will forever be Buffalo to me.

Buffalo, buff, buffler or tatonka
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

Bison, it's shorter and actually the correct name , true buffalo do not live in North America. Nothing politically correct about it, just the scientific name.
Sorry what little of my education that stuck comes out sometimes.

American Bison is the correct common name.
But people can call a screen a scream if they wish. Or maybe call them Big Shaggys.
Bison bison is the scientific name.

Bison bison is the scientific name. Do you call largemouth bass a green perch? Cause it isn’t really a bass

Bison, or buff if being lazy.
I thought I read that scientist haven’t found the bison thermal limit on the bottom end yet and it’s believed to be lower then Muskox, but muskox have evolved for the extreme cold better.

I can’t say if it’s lower than a musk ox ( which I doubt, but could be possible ) but they did a study in which they took a Yak, a Angus Cow, and a Scottish highland cow and put them in a freezer to measure stress. I can’t remember the exact temps the cattle stressed at but the Yak showed stress at -20*. They never could get it cold enough to produce stress signals in the buffalo Pretty remarkable animals. They are also dumb. About 10% of the population would succumb every year to things like drowning, falling off cliffs, etc. I researched Buffalo a ton before I went on my hunt. Learned a lot about them. I would love to see them become a staple of the western landscape once again

Learned a lot about them. I would love to see them become a staple of the western landscape once again I pretty sure it was Rinella, think podcast about his book and research. I found it interesting. I put in for them every year except in Alaska and South Dakota . I really want to draw the brooks tag, seems like a fun hunt

Bison bison is the scientific name. Do you call largemouth bass a green perch? Cause it isn’t really a bass I’d refer to Texas Parks & Wildlife. https://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/wild/species/lmb/Just a few hours ago I axed this one just outside the East entrance to Yellowstone and he didn’t seem to care. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2025/04/full-1231-450249-att.2mxnhp8vljjibdp_gslqlfjxc8gtolzwgm_hkxvvulm.jpeg)

I call them buffalo just because that's what they were always called when I was growing up. Same with Turkey Vultures. I grew up calling them buzzards and I still do sometimes. Old habits are hard to break.

Old habits are hard to break. This is me. Right or wrong, it was always the term we used. If it becomes completely normal to call them Bison then I may change.

Buffalo=Bison Buzzard=vulture Crawfish=Crayfish=Mudbug Antlers are sometimes referred to as horns, even though horns and Antlers are two different things. Certain incorrect words are so ingrained in the English language that they become correct.

Buffalo is more poetic, better for cowboy songs and such. Bison is better as a technical term for culinary and scientific clarity. I took an oath to always order bison whenever I see it on the menu. When I was in Germany as a kid I was thrilled to see a Wisent in the Berlin Zoo.

Buffalo=Bison Buzzard=vulture Crawfish=Crayfish=Mudbug Antlers are sometimes referred to as horns, even though horns and Antlers are two different things. Certain incorrect words are so ingrained in the English language that they become correct. I would not say that they are correct, but are commonly understood, at least within limited areas or communities. Many individual species can have numerous common names that often vary by region and language and the problem with that is that some individual common names get applied multiple species. Take "wildcat." In the US, this term has been applied to mountain lions (one of its 40 or so common names) and to bobcats. Of course, there are 'wildcats' from all over the world (20 or so) and none of them are the same species.
