Hello all..... like the topic titles says, looking to visit with those who has a No.1 in .280 Ack? Thinking about doing a build up or not.... Prices are all over the place on used No. 1 . Thinking about a donor rifle, not sure if Ruger made on in that cal in past years, dont keep up with all that. If not this may a pipe dream i have..... and stick to my .270 and be done with it!.... On the Ruger i want a 26" 1B barrel profile if i could, not sure what some of the custom barrels are. And yes we do handload here.
thanks, Hogflyer in central Tx.

If you can't find what you want & you decide on building custom, I have a Ruger #1V .25-06 donor you may be interested in.

Interesting, i figure some offers would show up here on the forum,,,, the rifle needs to be 25-06 270 Win 7-08 Rem 7x57 280 Rem 308 Win 30-06
And im sure a few around that i didnt find, need to stick with these mainly because of .473 Rim diam i need to hold for extractor fit. Im sure a smaller caliber would do, but that would create more machining costs.

Donor rifle can be any cartridge. Just need to buy correct extractor. Makes no difference in machining. This is a 28 Gauge No. 1 Started as some magnum, no barrel. Had to rework existing extractor. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2025/04/full-57808-449189-img_0748.jpeg)

Changing the extractor is no big deal unless its for a special cartridge. My gunsmith ground a .223 extractor to fit my 6.8mm SPC case on my Ruger. If you custom barrel, you'll also need a Ruger rib made to match your contour for scope mounting. The other option is you can have barrel blocks install like on a 1-V model.

I have a 9.3x74R No. 1 and we left the first 5” straight no taper and a scope base from a Browing BLR. Rest of barrel is octagon. In wood and scope on it is not noticeable. Very secure.

I’ve got six Ruger no.1’s. I have various calibers including a stainless in a Remington 280. If you’re going to convert to an ackley, that’s the best caliber to start with.

Longhorn74, if we found a 280 Rem on No.1 would there be a need to switch out the barrel? or can the chamber be bored to Ackley dimensions? that would be an easy out for this rifle? with out the expense of getting rifle, pulling barrel and putting new barrel install?
No.1 owners are not willing to let go a great product any time soon!

Hogflyer, I have never considered converting any of my no. 1’s. They’re just great as is, but I’m assuming converting a Remington 280 would be the easiest way to go.

You know, accuracy is a sometimes thing with #1's. I'll agree with you if talking right out of the box. The very first #1's were fitted with Wilson barrels, which were dogs. But when Ruger got around to making its own #1 barrels thing improved greatly. Most all poor shooting #1's can be accurized with a Hicks, trigger upgrade & glass bedding forend, butt & hangar to the receiver. Of course the right handload alone can often do wonders - just like for any other rifle!

Hill Country Rifle built me a 7 Ultra mag with a Lilja barrel on my #1 years ago that is a tack driver and maybe my all time favorite rifle. It started life as a 7mm magnum, was converted to a 7mm/300 Weatherby then HCR built the ultra mag. Outstanding work.

Just looked at some of the work they do, beautiful work, I see. Some of those full packages are pretty pricey! you get what you pay for! Wonder what the wait time for some work done today? Just mailed them, and see what gives.
thanks....
