I'm dating myself with this one. How many of you started hunting in the 50's, 60's & 70's and wore a brown canvas hunting suit. The jacket had a game pouch that went all the way around on the back. Some had an orange safety patch on the back. I go my first one around '70 or '71 as I recall. My pop purchased them at Sears in their hunting and shooting section. I had a couple throughout the early 70's as I grew. I don't remember ever hunting with anyone that had camo on back then. Camo came into play in the mid 70's. Great memories for sure!

I shot my first deer (buck) in '71. I remember when camo came out. That pattern is now "retro" camo. I still have one or two company gimme hats that Dad had made up. Texas Stores (liquor on one side, sporting goods on the other) was the only place we went for ammo. Nagel's was too fancy, and they're still too snooty.

I used to hunt with an older guy back in the early 90’s when the Canadian River was still public hunting. He left camp every morning with his red and black flannel coat, thermos of coffee and a pack of Marlboros. He would sit up in his makeshift tree stand and drink coffee with a cigarette in his mouth and killed deer every year. Some good times for sure
What happens at deer camp stay's at deer camp!

I had an Orvis field coat. Got on sale or I could not have afforded it. Wore it for 20 + years. it had the game bag in the back and was a great jacket. Killed the first buck in 1968 and put hundreds of quail in the game bag of that field coat. I hunted with Bob Hood, the old Star Telegram outdoor writer. Stil have a pictur somewhere that was in th the paper of me in that hunting coat.

Camo as we know it today really took off in the 90’s when real tree and mossy oak came into the main stream.
I started deer hunting in the mid 90’s and none of us wore camo nor did the folks we hunted with. I didn’t get my first camo until the late 90’s when I won a TPWD sponsored hunt and they outfitted us with new clothes.
It’s starting to come around the other way, solid colors are coming back en vogue with the new technical materials.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

It was before the 90's and as I recall it was the Burnam Brothers who made varmint calls. They were using army surplus camo from WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

Omahas military surplus ft worth . You could get military camo back in the 70s there . Some of it was well used and some pretty good . Think they were in business since the 60s .

Oshmans in Bay City got my first set in 1970. Was real close to the military camo.

Correct, the proliferation of hunting shows in mid 90s started ramming the Mossy Oak down our throats, agree 100x with that...

A red plaid shirt and blue jeans were camo suits when I started hunting. I also had a brown canvas vest that held shotgun shells in the front and had the pass thru game bag on the back. That thing toted many a dove, squirrel and a few quail back to the truck. Man, those were the days.

Been there many times Used to go there when I was in school. We would eat at Angelo's once or twice a week and often times would make a stop at Omaha. That was 50 years ago.

Look at any hunting picture here with a dead critter, deer lease picture, 3 year old kids on the lease or in the blind, you will see head to to camo.
You do not need camo to sit in a box blind to kill a deer at 100 yards or hang around camp..
It is all a fashion statement.

I have a heavy canvas game belt. Rear pocket for game, right pocket for shells, left pocket for empties. Never was one for the vests.

I use to get my hunting and camping supplies, ammo, etc at Gibsons. When visiting relatives in Waco we'd make a stop at Cogdills.

I had the old camo pattern Wall's zip up coveralls. No trap door. Lesson learned.

Man, you are stirring up a lot of memories with this post. I still have my Dad's old brown canvas coat he wore when we went hunting in the mid 70's, he purchased it from Montgomery Ward and it was the Western Field brand. It was almost just as you described yours, I had one similar, but it went the way of the dodo as I grew up, fortunately I still have his. Great post Sir, thanks!

I still don't wear Camo to this day, actually my coveralls are camo because the brown ones got lost when we left Mexico, but ive only worn them once or twice in the last several years, I try to look like the rancher instead of a hunter

I have some of the ugliest camo known to man, none of it matches or is the same pattern and I wear whatever's comfortable for the weather, including solids. Now, I do chuckle the times I've been traveling on a hunt and see a young man with a matching, high performance and high dollar "outfit" on that you can almost see the tags still hanging on. Hey, I get it - hunt of a lifetime, why not? And, it's a free country. I own a ranch. I'm not a rancher. 'Only time I feel like a rancher is when something is busted and has to be fixed right now!

It is all a fashion statement. Yes! Same here. If I’m sitting in a box blind I don’t wear any camo unless it’s just for warmth and happens to be camo. Doesn’t make any sense

started hunting in 1963-4, camo was not a thing nor did anyone I knew had any. By the late 60s some of the surplus places (Killen's Lampasas, on base Fort Hood, original Academy in Austin, etc.) started seeing some of the original "jungle" style camo likely from Korean/Vietnam conflicts. Sizes were fairly limited or at least none big enough to fit me. Usually had on a t-shirt, waffle style thermal underwear, blue jean jacket ... when cold, froze half to death. I found a camo field jacket at Killen's probably in the mid to late 70s that I could put on over my blue jean jacket as an additional layer. had hand me down lace up work boots, non-insulated, with cotton socks, so my feet were always cold too. My first insulated boots were from Sears in 1979 for my first CO elk/MD hunt. Now days, I have some heavier outer clothes that are camo but mainly for the insulation factor as I am pretty warm natured and don't really have any needs for heavy coats in my everyday life.

Funny memory hunting in the late 60's or early 70's. My best friend dad got a good laugh at us because one time we wore bell bottom blue jeans deer hunting, it was straight legged Levi's after that.
