We always watch this pasture when we leave this location, because we see deer, occasionally. So far, it’s been all does. When we saw this one, we couldn’t see antlers, so we assumed it was another doe. Me and my lead hand both thought she looked kind of big, so I slowed down for a better look. He said he might see antlers, but he’s not sure. Fine. I’ll stop. Someone find the binos. They did and handed them to me. I proceeded to come unglued. Dang it, we nearly drove past this buck without giving him a proper look! He was beautiful and much nicer than any buck I’ve seen in the Midland area. We don’t see a lot of deer out here, so it’s a big deal to see something like him. He’s a clean ten point. Pretty wide and symmetrical. Just as pretty a rack as you could ask for. Seriously one of the prettiest racks I’ve ever seen on a buck. I wish I had a better picture. He deserves to be honored more than this. He wasn’t huge. Easily 130, and quite possibly 140. If he went more, it wouldn’t surprise me, but this buck wasn’t about inches. He was about aesthetics.

Yeah, I thought the same, but his body seems more mature. Kind of saggy. Big tarsals. I’m curious what others think his age might be.

That gut/waistline screams mature deer... unless all he's been doing during the rut is watching college football and drinking beer.

There are some monsters around Midland, grew up in Odessa and a buddy and his dad had a lease not far southeast of Midland. They shot several 160+ out there, and saw some even bigger that never got within rifle range. That was the only downside to hunting out there, if you were in a 10ft tall stand you could see for 2 miles haha.

I’ve heard that but never seen it. It’s clear that there’s some good hunting to be had here. It’s just not all that obvious.

He’s very young, and is going to be a giant if he stays alive, a neighbor of mine that raises deer, and guides in South Texas, said they taught him to age bucks where their neck ties into their brisket, the lower it is the older the buck, this buck I would say is no more than 31/2 years old.

A mature buck that hasn't gone through a rut ...neck thin.... tarsals not bleeding like a deer that went through a rut....maybe 5 1/2.
