A comment that Stub had made on a different thread got me thinking...Just about any hunter that I know hates having domestic dogs running loose on their property. But, does it really bother the deer? We've got tons of coyotes. I have witnessed deer reacting to coyotes. Sometimes they will just watch the coyote warily, sometimes, they will run off a little ways and then watch the coyote warily. And sometimes they will take off completely. In any of the above cases, it does not seem to get them to permanently vacate the area. Coyotes are all over, so there is no escaping them. Do deer view coyotes differently than domestic dogs?

In the grand scheme of things probably not. What is different in the short term is that domestic dogs are more likely to relate to man made objects such as blinds/feeders/lodging and stay near those things over a longer period of time than a coyote who is usually always moving.

Do deer view coyotes differently than domestic dogs? Dogs typically chase deer more than yotes. Yotes focused on injured, and especially fawning season. With that said if yotes pack up they are real good at running deer into fences

I`ve gotten pictures of one of these dogs the past 2 seasons. Three years ago, we had a couple of big white dogs with collars show up 3 different times. I just don`t understand how people who obviously love their dogs let them run loose during deer season when sooner or later something could happen to them. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2025/01/full-8162-442474-img_1509.jpg)

From what I've seen, domestic dogs are more likely to pack up than coyotes. When I've seen domestic dogs while out hunting it's never been just one.
Coyotes on the other hand, it's not uncommon to see more than one but the majority of my sightings are of individuals.

Those big white dogs could easily be LGDs such as Pyrenees and Anatolians that are outside permanently with their livestock. One of the traits of those dogs is that they tend to wander (especially if there is poor fencing) in order to push their scent markings over a wider area and discourage coyotes from entering that area. They will also handle any rogue dogs loose in the area so not the worst thing in the world to have around. Our neighbor has a few and usually they return back to their herd pretty quick.

I have had feral dogs transient my property and yes, the deer react to them way more than to coyotes.
Typical reaction to deer with coyotes: they hear them howl, nothing. If they are close and see them, they go on alert and watch until out of sight. If coyote turns toward deer the deer will blow and then trot off. I have never seen a deer being run by coyotes but I do have pics of fawns in coyotes mouth, but who is to say it wasn't dead already.
Typical reaction to deer with feral dogs: they see them and they run. I have seen deer being chased by feral dogs on more than one occasion. I shoot feral dogs whenever possible. Even had a pack of feral dogs attack and kill a feral pig one morning, It was killed audibly, several of us heard it going on from different stands close by, and we found it later that day (while tracking a deer) just dead, clearly by dogs as the ears were cut up pretty badly. I was fine with that, since it was a dead hog, but they didn't even eat any of it. Just killed and left. Once while hog hunting, had a pack of feral dogs come thru and one feral dog stood at the base of my tree stand and growled looking up at me. It died of lead poisoning. They do react like coyotes to a squeak call or a lip squeak and have arrowed a few that way when i see them during deer season
Domestic dogs are a little different. I have never seen collared dogs chasing a deer, nor have I really seen a collared dog in the stand. I do see them from time to time on camera and I have had people on my place with dogs in the deer feeder areas. For the most part, deer come back to those feeders pretty quick (within a 12 hr period). This is usually outside deer season tho

I read something recently that stated a coyote will kill an average of 19 fawns during the denning period.

When hog hunting with my Catahoulas if a deer runs in front of them they might chase for 100 yards or so but get back to doing my bidding pretty quick. Seems like they are testing their speed against the deer's. I blow my horn and they come back, I cuss em a little and we get back to hog hunting.

Would be a very fat coyote if that was the case. Also, I would have to have quads in every doe in my area to keep up with the fawn crop I see if that were the case....which I have rarely seen triplets but never more. Twins for sure

I have noticed lately that the white one is the only one that shows up now. I wonder what might have happened to the other two? And no, although I have thought about it, it wasn't me.

most of the places I currently hunt are miles and miles away from any house, so any dogs would be very far from their home. Where I grew up, the ranchers all told us to shoot dogs on site as most were abandoned a few miles outside of town and just trying to survive anyway they could, including calves, sheep, goats, fawns, etc. I also agree they will pack up and hunt as a team ... I love all animals and would find it hard to do now days later in my life...

I’d rather have the coyotes than someone’s dogs running my place for sure

If the rancher found out you intentionally let one walk, you didn't get to come back and hunt again. Did what we had to do because we didn't want to loose a whole section of the ranch that we got to hunt for free. Thankfully he kept the stray numbers low so we didn't have to remove many ourselves.

I was out snipe hunting once and encountered two aggressive feral pitbull/catch dog types. I only had a 20 gauge O/U; I actually had some slugs in case I saw hogs so I loaded them up but thankfully didn't have to try to hit two dogs with two shots before they got me. Ever since then if I'm in feral dog country I make sure I have something else on hand if I have my O/U and try to keep a few buckshot shells squirreled away as well.

I’ve mentioned on here about a pack (4) of dogs that came after me, here on our place. Scared the poo out of me. Four dogs and I had three rounds in the rifle.

I have never seen a deer being run by coyotes but I do have pics of fawns in coyotes mouth, but who is to say it wasn’t dead already Backed out of my garage on the property I used to own here in Arkansas just in time to see a big yote run down and catch a fawn right at the edge of my yard. Momma doe came looking for the fawn 30 seconds later, but the yote had already killed the fawn and carried it off.

I saw a coyote chasing an 8pt buck in, I believe 2011 while sitting in an open stand in S. Tx on a public mgmt hunt. Chased him out in the sendero into the brush and continued back up the sendero towards me. I took a harried shot but kicked up dirt under it. It was like something out of National Geographic.

Have had domestic dogs kill 5 axis inside a hf the last month, needless to say they have been handled accordingly. Coyotes are bad on our blackbuck fawns and we kill every one we see. Only canine that gets a pass is a fox unless someone wants to mount it.

Shale complained to Elmo about dogs spoiling some of his hunts. Elmo told him it was sheep farm and he better shoot every one he sees or he would no longer be allowed to hunt the place. The very next morning, a red dog came out and Shale shot him right there. A couple of minutes later, Elroy, Elmo’s son, crested the same hill and saw his favorite dog was shot right there.
Elmo took care of it and Shale continued to hunt there for years but, he never again shot a border collie.
