Anyone else looking forward to the snow? Trappers in the far north refer to snow as “The white book.” Tracks and direction of movement are easily seen,

Yes and no.

The no part is the normal one hour and forty five minute drive turns into a challenge, the Yes part it is always interesting seeing all of the critters tracks in the snow and being able to identify most of them and scratching your head at other ones.

Going hunting in the snow was one of my favorite things growing up in the Appalachians. You feel like you're in one of those classic hunting scene paintings. The first duck I ever shot was in the snow, wood duck flushed from a beaver pond. Of course it landed in the pond and I had to wade out in the frigid water to get it.

Yes for hunting , no for trapping. Drifting and freeze thaw are not fun to trap in.
Already used about 5 gallons of wax dirt and now more snow for us too, yuk !!

We picked up about 4 inches overnight, now the drive up to the ranch will be iffy at best. Hoping to find a couple of nice fuzzy bobcats in our traps in the morning.

It's about as much fun as you can have while hunting to call coyotes in the snow, that said, I am taking off for Arizona for some warmer weather.

Always enjoy being out in the snow. Shot my first deer in the now too. Makes you feel like you are hunting a new piece of property. Only time I ever got lost at the ranch was walking to a blind in the dark with a fresh 6" of powder and more coming down. Turned down what I thought was the deer trail I normally walk to that blind and took a few minutes to realize I was on the wrong trail and couldn't figure out exactly where I was relative to where I wanted to be. Tried to find my way back on my own but ended up needing to take my map out on my phone and made it to the blind eventually. Definitely made me realize how much snow can change the landscape.

That's what I'm talking about! Thermal coyotes and snow are made for each other.

Leaving tomorrow for the old stomping grounds at Idaho Falls. The wife and I have two cow elk tags for the desert winter range, so hoping the little bit of snow so far this winter has moved some in there.

I'm colorblind and have a terrible time tracking wounded game, except in the snow. Grew up hunting in Minnesota, so yeah I like hunting in the snow.
