Rolling plains area. I have a pretty good idea on the age. Would like others well versed to chime in.

Not sandy. A fine red clay in areas with some areas super compacted.

I’ll bet his brisket rolled around like a bag of jelly and he had calloused knees.

I’ve shot older but without knowing how their teeth age in that area, I couldn’t say how old for that one. Definitely old though.

There’s a lot of variables involved in aging by teeth. It’s not an exact science.

Old. Is it sandy soil area? I thought the question about the soil was headed a different direction as this guy is older than dirt! There have been notes on this thread and others that aging by tooth wear is not exact...and that is true to a point. It is impossible to tell whether this deer is 8.5, 9.5, or even older...but estimating the age by wear over time on the same property is still a VERY useful tool to anyone who is interested in ground truthing their on-the-hoof aging as part of an age structured management plan (i. e., don't shoot the young buck!!!!). My guess is the original poster has a very good idea about age...and looking at the harvest photo...he was able to confirm that in fact this was a very mature to post mature buck and the may have been the last, best chance to shoot him before he went severely downhill or even died.

We are in a very sandy are and shot several known age bucks in the 6 yo range that don’t even come close to that wear. We have shot a handful with similar and more wear that were obviously mature but no history.

1st molar or the 4th tooth in the gum line makes me go 8.5, red sandy dirt I think it only knocks 1 yr of the age charts
