I didn’t grow up in a hunting family, but I would like to start hunting so that it can be something I share with my kids. I’m 47 and I have been out hunting twice. Once was with a bad outfitter who I found on here. That was a bad expereice. He took to to a property that he didn’t notify the owners he would be hunting on. The second was a big hunt that I didn’t get anything on. But, I really want to get into it and I don’t know where to start. I see that the state has a piece of land not too far from me that is available for public hunting (not even sure how that works). So if anyone wouldn’t mind giving me some legitimate advice on where to start or who to contact that would be great. I live in Temple, TX if that helps. Thank you

Fort Cavazos has some hunting opportunities. Friend of mine took his 10 year old out there earlier this week and the kid got a doe.

Pretty girls and old cantinas

WMA's ade good for do it yourself hunting.
& hog hunts are great way ta start.
Son & i covered the OSBWMA.
Started with the archery deer/hog hunts.
But he enjoyed the Jan-end March hog hunts.
That's whin we covered a lot of ground.
Twas after the deer hunts, so didn't mess up thar hunts.
College Station has(had) a WMA N/E if remember right.
Hunted it several times & took hogs.
Two different parking area'South end & one on west end.
If can find one (WMA) that has hog only. Tis best.
Usta b a $48.00 permit by @ walmart of were get
boat licence/registration. They usdta give a book out.
List of WMA's with rules.
Best wish's. Enjoy time spent with the kids,
& many enjoyable times spent.
Memories shared with family/friends are special,

Welcome to these forums.

Learn all you can about the behavior of the wild game you're after and then all you can about your choice tool (rifle and/or bow) to harvest them. Practice with your rifle or bow until you can't miss.

You'll also find Facebook pages where hunters share information on just about every piece of public hunting land in Texas.

Here's a couple of videos to help get started. If they're too basic there's hundreds if not thousands more where these came from that cover every level of the sport.

Good luck.
