Looks mature to me, I would absolutely shoot that deer.

Very nice buck. Always liked high horned ones.

I’ve got some bucks in the 7.5-9.5 age range I would rather pull the trigger on so I don’t feel rushed to shoot with the 5yr olds.

It’s great when you have the age structure to be able to pass marginal age deer because you have other choices. We are in the same boat.
If we have a 5yo that’s 160 and several 6 or 7yo that are 155, it’s easy to rationalize killing the older/smaller deer.
Now if the 5 was 170 and the 6’s were 145 that would be tough.
It’s also helpful if the group of hunters have killed big deer and don’t mind waiting for the occasional special deer.
You have a good deal going on there.

He's a tall one up I'm guessing he is 5.5, if so what age do y'all hold off to before taking one?

Depends on the individual buck, their range, and how big we think they could get. If they are deer that we know live fully within our property then we will probably give a buck another year or two compared to a buck we know lives elsewhere and ventures in only occasionally. A basic smaller framed 8pt will get opened up at 5.5 and there is usually a cull or two we don’t like anything about that we will take out at an earlier age.

We are landowners not leasers so the only folks that have to align to the rules are my dad and I. The bucks we’ve killed the last couple years have been between 6.5-8.5 and there are usually 5-10 bucks that meet our criteria of huntable deer. That said they get old for a reason and a good handful of those will likely never get shot by us or others.

Double, y’all have a great thing going. By always having more shootable bucks than you have hunters is a recipe for lots of bucks getting old. It’s a game we try to play but it’s a unique situation to get there. All deer don’t get big so the more the merrier in those older age glasses because theres better odds of an occasional super buck. I know you know. Enjoy the dream you are living. up
