I have zero knowledge about thermals so for those that do can you buy a decent set up for 3-5k? If not what’s the budget need to be and what’s a solid unit on the market right now? I’m planning on putting it on a 30 caliber of some type but that has to be bought or built as well so I’m going from the ground up.

What is intended use? It's kinda like buying an auto on-line for now. Difficult to evaluate different brands. But yes, there are decent units for 3-5K$.

You can get a very decent thermal scope for 3 to 5 thousand. Which one you choose will depend on a lot of things and you should consult with an expert before plunking down your hard earned cash. I recommend getting a hold of Jason at Outdoor Legacy. He won't steer you wrong.

I recommend shopping around for prices because they can vary a lot. AR or bolt gun? What type of game and what distance? It makes quite a difference

AR platform on pigs at 150 or closer, most will be inside 100.

There's quite a range of thermals that will work for you for that purpose. You can opt for higher performance than you actually need, or you can economize and do just fine.

Talk to Jason. He and his staff use them all and know the Ins and the Outs.

I don't have one.. considered it, but I already have 3 thermals so went with the night vision only version.. But the DNT ThermNight gets pretty good reviews. Looks perfect for inside 150yds and comes with a mount for under $1000 if you look around for a 10% off code..

It sounds like these are the guys to talk to so I’ll give them a call and see what they recommend but this thermal seems pretty legit. I’d be fine spending more but if I can get a solid thermal for under 5k like this one I think I’d be pretty happy.

It comes with two good sized batteries that just slide into the side of it. It will run all night on them. I have never run one all the way down in one night but the spare is included if it’s needed. Mine has been flawless.

Huey Outdoors has a pretty good sale going on. Spend $3K and use the coupon code to get a Free Rix K2 Scanner ($399). Also, if you purchase a Rix Leap L6 you get the Free Rix Laser Rangefinder ($499) and can use the coupon code to get the Free Rix K2 Scanner ($399). And they pay the sales tax.

Another thing to consider is if the dealer is in Texas. Sales tax adds up when you’re spending 3-5 thousand bucks on something. There are plenty of out of state dealers who don’t charge sales tax.

True but then there is the pride and honor in supporting Texan owned small businesses who offer amazing customer support and service and it keeps Texan dollars out of the carpet baggers hands. And I'm not just talking about our company, lots of great Texas thermal dealers out there and yes sales tax costs us all extra money but again, at least that money stays in our great state.

Take a look at the Rix Storm 6. 640 thermal for $2799. Outdoor Legacy featured it as one of their Best Of for 2024. I just purchased one and couldn’t be happier.

Seeing as how the majority of thermal optics are manufactured in other countries, I'm content with "that" money just staying the United States.

Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with Outdoor legacy. In the past have bought two Bering Optics Thermals and Night Snipe IR illuminators from PredatorHunterOudoors. I have bought a hand held AGM scanner and the RICO RH50 V2 from Outdoor Legacy.

My business bona fides. During the last 63 years, I have mowed yards, cut firewood, worked in chemical plants, framed apartments, waited tables, bartended, owned a steel fabrication business, hotshot delivery service, wholesaled cars, had a tote note lot, direct writer for Farmers Ins. Have had a TREC Broker's license, and was a licensed Commercial Real Estate Appraiser in Texas.

I now tell folks I am "gainfully unemployed"

Two things remain constant. TANSTAAFL and "it's hard to lose by making a profit.

So my take.....

I discovered the Late Night Vision Show somewhere about Episode 270 and have made sure to watch both the Two Minute Tuesday and Thursday YouTube production. I kill schidt all the time. A skosh over 600 hogs since July 2019 IIRC. A bunch with both night vision and thermal. Watching vids of nothing but someone else killing schidt does not trip my trigger.

What does is folks like Jason and Hans that give the specs and tell what they like and don't like.

Enthusiasm, Product Knowledge and Benefits interest me.

Las Tres Amigas provide amazing customer service. Speaking with those ladies is a delight for an ol' fart. If I am not directly connected, I leave a message and usually get a call back within 10 to 15 minutes,

I've had conversations with both Jason and Hans. Never any pressure to buy.

They are Texans.

Finally, I like their business model and wish them great success.

I bought the RH50 V2 when it was $4799 and have not looked back.

Yes I could have bought out of state and saved +/- $400, but education is costly.

I figure that considering the information that I have gleaned from watching these guys, I am in their debt.

I mentioned to Jason the last time we spoke, most likely a thermal drone will be my next major purchase from them.

ya!

Of course, once you get tired of swinging your rifle around to scan with your new thermal, you will realize you should have gotten a little scanner as well. cheers

Already on the list, I’m not swinging a rifle around when I’ll probably never get to shoot it. This is the kiddo and wife’s game plan, I’m simply the Uber driver..

Thank you SO much for the kind words and most of all for your continued business. You've been a pleasure to deal with and extremely kind to the 3 ladies (Las Tres Amigas as you call them.ha!) in our office. We truly thank you for choosing to do business with us and we're glad our information provided has been of value to you! Thank you again!

That's good. A scanner is a must. The RICO RH50 V2 is on sale most places. No tax and free shipping here plus through 12/6/24, 4 free extra batteries. 3,999.00 and it's a small family run business.
