I have 2 places I'm hunting just north of Burkburnett. On both places (250 & 150 acres) we have 100% mesquite trees. No oaks or cedars. There is crop land around us, but nothing growing now. What the heck are the deer eating? We have 3 feeders going with corn and the deer occasionally stop by, but not regularly. I figure as it cools down they will be more interested in the corn. I just don't have a clue as to what they are eating besides grass and browse. Anyone have any input? We have used some throw & grow but can't really make a food plot because of the cows on the bigger place. On the other, the neighbors cows frequently get through the fence and clean up at the feeder there.
Any ideas??

Have you had good feeder activity before or earlier this year? We are a few hours north of you and have a similar situation. Our place is new to us, but we had some decent activity, feeder activity has dropped to almost nothing in the past few weeks.

Not really, it has been sporadic at best. Hogs and rabbits are consistent though! Just nothing is coming in the daylight when I'm sitting in my bow blind.

Deer will do well on mesquite, native grass and browse. It sounds like there is plenty for a decent habitat.

Thank you so much. I'm used to having some hardwoods for acorns and needed someone to confirm what the land owner said.

Empty crop lands is great for deer to browse. For me, I would put out eight lb.s of golden nuggets and plenty of corn and spread it thin and cover plenty of area. All bucks come for the Tinks 69 perfect for feeding this time of year. Also deer use open fields to cool off at night...look for trails coming to and from the open fields. The most important thing is the rutting action going on. Use the grunt call and fawn bleap every 10 minutes or so. The deer go to the fields late in the evening. Come from the fields early...The moon sets where I am at 07:45am. So, for me I would hunt early in the morning and at 11:30 am and late in the evening when it cools off to below 90 degrees.
good Luck

South of Bowie, the ground is totally littered with acorns and I’m butt deep in oaks. However, one archer got a really nice 10 point coming to corn.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.
