How is the deer hunting in this area? Looking at some property for sale in the area, but I’ve never hunted there or know anyone that does?

lower population, bigger bodies and some impressive antler potential. closer to the river is always better. Lots of wheat around too. I owned a place about 5 miles NW of Vera on 267 for several years. Love that country...

BigLou and I were neighbors at the place he is referring to. Definitely lower deer density, but it seems to be increasing. Mature bucks can easily be north of 150. Much bigger bodies and some scattering of mule deer, turkey and javelina around. Lots of hogs, coyotes and rattlesnakes. Dove can be very good. Also good geese, Sandhill crane and ducks in that area.

My dad used to have a lease off the river outside Seymour for 4-5 yrs back in the early 2000's - Big_Ag sums it up very well. There was always that chance of that big one coming through but you just didn't see a ton of deer each sit, and had been just flat skunked multiple times.

Like BA said though, lot's of other stuff to make up for it, especially is you have ag fields in or around your property. A ton of geese and cranes and plenty of hogs. Turkey for us was average. The land owner spoke of quite a few mountain lion sightings as well. We never saw one but I heard the female do that awful scream thing they do on 2 different occasions (and no, it wasn't a fox).

All in all, really fun country.

Never heard of Mule Deer in that country. I hunted south of there in northern Throckmorton county and we had a lot of deer. IM surprised by these reports of low deer density. Of oourse maybe its just relative to other areas or maybe it changes that quick going north.

What I've always heard as you go farther west and north in Cross Timbers region, less densities than further south and east but can be some hoss deer. Hearing mule deer is surprising, thought they started farther west and north of there, go figure.

There’s now a mule deer season in Knox County. Seems like TPWD added it 7-8 years ago.

vera is west of seymour. Its in the "soil change" if thats what you want to call it....red clay with salt cedars. We hunt 15 miles out of seymour and we are mesquite and lighter clay. Its almost like 2 different geographical areas. We have some really nice deer around us.
Cannot speak of the type of deer around vera though
