Seeing Tres post his handiwork, thought I would show what I came up with. Not nearly as much work as he goes through.

Started with an old shovel handle. ( Walking stick and club if necessary. )

Then went to a piece of China Berry limb. Has to be one of the lightest and strongest wood I have come across.

Then went to Bamboo with a hidden feature. The reason for the hidden feature was a boar hog I came across one morning. He came out of the brush onto the road and stopped and stared at me and the Lab. Started popping his jaws and then started a slow steady walk toward us.All I had on me was a pocket knife with a blade less than 2 inches. Was thinking that this might not end well. Then he heard some sow in the brush and started leaving. Went about 15' and started the routine all over again before hearing the sows again and finally left. So the bamboo stick acquired a piece of old table saw blade cut down to a point and a larger bamboo cap keeps it covered. Several other neighbors inquired about the bamboo sticks so have made several and given them away.

Looks nice. Bamboo makes some nice walking sticks too and light as a feather. Put a rubber end from a crutch and you are good to go.

Bamboo makes great ones, Hickory does as well. Another very strong wood one I have been enjoying is Crape Myrtle, every few years when I cut most of ours way back there are quite a few good staffs to use.

CCBIRDDOGMAN, were you able to put a stain on your. I tried a couple time and each time it wiped right off. I finally took a propane torch to mine to give it a bit
darker look. Burning is also supposed to make the bamboo last quite a bit longer.

Didn't try stain. Just sat in sun on porch a couple months, sanded with 220 grit and sprayed some minwax spar eurathane on em. Me and my dad made 4 at once, 8 years ago and all still look as good as new.
