I won a hunt on a second draw for the first time. I normally consider pending second draw to mean I can forget about that hunt. I guess somebody forgot to pay or decided not to go for some reason. I’ll be going to Pedernales Falls State Park for gun deer - either sex. I’m really looking forward to it. I plan on going a few times over the next couple months to try and get a bit of a lay of the land. I don’t hunt until January. I have a new Q Fix I am looking forward to using. I have a 8.6 blackout barrel with suppressor and a 6.5 creedmoor barrel with suppressor. The 8.6 is super quiet and fun to shoot with subs but drops a lot pretty fast. For anybody that has hunted there, is there any reason to bring the 6.5 instead?

Congrats on the second draw

Once you go and scout it you’ll see the layout of the park, that may help with your decision. . I never hunted it but I’m familiar with the park. Lot of cover and brush, at least on a lot of the hikes.. Had a buddy draw it years back said the shots out of his blind was well under 100 yards.
Time I went I saw a bunch of deer and some pigs.

Lucky3 I sent you a few pics from an antlerless hunt I did a few years back. Let me know if you didn't get them and I'll try to post them on the forum.

I hunted there in 2009. Spent two sits at "Youth Camp Road" spot without seeing anything Relocated, took a big doe that evening. Shot was close, 50 yd. Two other hunters killed does, one shot a small pig.

Me and my BIL drew the antlerless hunt there in 2018 I believe. I spent the first day and a half at a picnic area without seeing a deer. My BIL was up the road about half a mile and shot a doe and a couple of hogs. We went in that night and were talking to the guy running the hunt. He asked if I had a pop-up blind (I did).

He led us down to the camp ground and we set up the popup right beside the campsite pad. I think we were about 10 feet from the parking spot. We came back the next morning and there were around twenty sets of glowing eyes to meet us. We unloaded and I parked a few campsites down and came back.

My BIL spread a bag of corn around the area while I held a flashlight in front of us. Deer were following us around while we were doing that. As shooting light approached deer started filtering out. There was only one left by shooting light so I put her down. I took another about an hour and a half later.

It was a good meat hunt.

It sounds like you guys had a good time on the hunt. I’m hoping to see lots of game. We will see. It sounds like I should be fine with the 8.6. It will be interesting to see how well the round works. I’m shooting 342 grain bullets that have 4 petals that bend back 90 degrees and with the 1:3 twist rate it should work well.
