Never experienced this myself, but pretty sure I would chalk this up as a lost bird!

The first time I dove hunted in Alice this happened to me, snake didn't survive

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

Haven’t had that one happen to me yet. That snake looks pretty well fed, it already has a couple of dub size lumps. I have had the fire ants get my Dove and a hawk got my Quail one time. And then one time there was a guy sitting between a friend and I who couldn’t hit a thing, but kept claiming our birds. He did that until he finally got a limit.

I don't remember why I was hunting without a dog, but downed a couple birds in a pond with no wind. Before they got to the bank friggin' turtles breasted them.

Long ago when my old man was still around we saw a 5+ lb bass hammer one.

Shot a dove along a tree line and as it was going down a hawk came out of it and snagged it. Big poof of feathers.

But... a rattler would not survive if I was hunting on my lease.

Hunted on a public land place years ago in Runge. I shot a big white wing and it went down over a brush line. Crossed over and found a puff of feathers on the ground next to a burrow but no bird. I looked around a sec thought about sticking something down in the hole, but not my hand, about that time here came my dove hobbling out of that hole. Guess he didn’t like it down there.

Yeah, the one time I got invited to hunt quail on the King, I couldn't hit squat. Second day, last flush, I nailed a bird. Another guy claimed it. I did enjoy watching the dog handlers. One carried a putter and could knock a rising bird's head off with it. grin

Fishing rod with a topwater works.

I had a Golden that retrieved everyone's birds and brought them to me. Distance was normally not an issue.

That's exactly what this guy did. My buddy and I would just look at him in disbelief. It wasn't worth arguing or fighting over.
