Wife wants a bifold door on the bathroom. The door measures 82" high by 37.5" wide. I can find the door she wants in 80" x 36", but an inch gap top & bottom and a 3/4" gap on each side seems a bit much.

Do bifold doors come in the size I need, or are those gaps normal?

Thanks for any help.

J.R.

Not sure about regular bifold doors. Have you looked at the bifold barn door types?

Oh, for sure. I would rather have it inside the frame, but the bifold barn door is certainly an option.

I've never seen an 82"x37.5" as a standard size. I think you're looking at a special order.

My advice is to put a tape measure on whatever door you are buying if possible. On a remodel we did recently, we found that the off the shelf 80" doors actually measured 79-3/8" to allow an undercut. The width was more true. They were able to order the same door for me without the undercut for a couple locations where we needed the extra length.

Thanks. Think I may just buy the hardware & build the panels myself. I'm pretty handy with wood & can bet the socks off the cost of ordering custom.

The bifolds I had at home years ago had a track inside top casing. As for as width, you can add a ripped to width 1x6 to one or both sides of opening. In fact you might add casing to top and sides of opening to obtain desired opening.

Call Bee Builders in Melissa, TX.

They might surprise you at the low cost of your custom made doors. Since they buy so much bulk lumber, it might not be worth the materials at retail and your time. I know they've been there for 30 years, maybe longer. They do great work, and their customer service is top notch. They built all 12 of my solid core swinging doors in my house.

Consider a barn door style that doesn't fold. I built one out of reclaimed barn wood that I bought from a design store in the architectural district in Dallas. Ordered all the hardware from Restoration Hardware. They had the hangers, rollers, a trac that you drill, all the fasteners and the finger pulls for each side. This was for a total bathroom remodel I did. This style saves a lot of space. I have pic's of the whole process if you decide to go this route.

An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

Thanks, J.G. Melissa isn't that far away, either...
